Instructions for use of Xylocaine Gel 2%
Xylocaine Gel 2% is an over-the-counter medicine for superficial anesthesia of the mucous membranes, known as a local anesthetic.It is used for local anesthesia of mucous membranes and as a lubricant, for example when inserting a breathing tube, internal examinations with an endoscope or inserting a catheter.
Active ingredients and ingredients
The active ingredient in Xylocaine Gel 2% is lidocaine hydrochloride 1 H2O.Each gram of the gel contains 20 mg of lidocaine hydrochloride.In addition, the gel contains the following excipients: 0.7 mg/g methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate and 0.3 mg/g propyl 4-hydroxybenzoate as preservatives, hypromellose, hydrochloric acid / sodium hydroxide solution for pH adjustment and purified water.
Areas of application
Xylocaine Gel 2% is used for local anesthesia of mucous membranes and as a lubricant.It is suitable for various medical procedures such as insertion of a breathing tube, internal examinations with an endoscope and insertion of a catheter.
Contraindications
Xylocaine Gel 2% must not be used if you are allergic to lidocaine, certain other local anesthetics, methyl-4- and/or propyl-4-hydroxybenzoate, para-aminobenzoic acid or any of the other ingredients of the medicine.The gel should also not be used if there are significant disorders of the cardiac conduction system, cardiac insufficiency or shock due to reduced cardiac activity or blood volume.
Dosage and application
Xylocaine Gel 2% should always be used exactly as directed by the doctor or the package leaflet.It causes a quick and deep local anesthetic lasting about 20 to 30 minutes.The dosage must be adjusted individually, especially in weakened or elderly patients, acutely ill patients or patients with sepsis.
For local anesthesia of the urethra in men, about 8 g of the gel is introduced dropwise, followed by reapplication after 3 to 4 minutes.In women, about 5 g of the gel is placed into the urethra.In anesthesiology, about 5 g of the gel is distributed over the lower third of the tube.The maximum dose is 16 g for adults of normal body weight.
Side effects
Like all medicines, Xylocaine Gel 2% can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.Possible side effects include allergic reactions, hypersensitivity reactions, local irritation at the application site and toxic side effects in the event of overdose.In the event of an overdose, symptoms such as agitation, restlessness, dizziness, hearing and vision problems, tingling in the mouth, slurred speech, nausea, vomiting, tremors and muscle twitching may occur.
Storage
Xylocaine Gel 2% should be kept out of the reach of children and not stored above 25°C.It must not be frozen.After opening, the gel should be used within 28 days.
