Eye occlusion patches have been specifically developed for the treatment of amblyopia, also known as functional low vision.This condition occurs when a child sees clearly in only one eye, even though there are no organic or neural causes.Amblyopia occurs due to inadequate stimulation of the sensory cells in the eye, which leads to maldevelopment of the visual system.Possible causes for this include refractive errors, squinting, clouding of the lens or drooping of an upper eyelid.When the eyes send different visual impressions to the brain, the brain primarily processes the sharp images and neglects the weaker visual impressions.As a result, the visual system of the weaker eye is not sufficiently stimulated to develop its full visual performance.

Early detection of amblyopia makes it possible to make up for the lack of development of the visual system through occlusion therapy.Depending on the underlying disease, treatment is carried out either as a stand-alone therapy or in combination with other measures, such as prescription glasses or surgery.The duration of the occlusion depends on the severity of the amblyopia and the age of the child.
