The medicine is a vitamin used to prevent bleeding.It is used to prevent and treat vitamin K deficiency bleeding in newborns.

Active ingredients and ingredients

The active ingredient in this supplement is phytomenadione, also known as vitamin K1.In addition, it contains the following excipients: 3-sn-phosphatidylcholine from soybeans, glycocholic acid, sodium hydroxide, concentrated hydrochloric acid, water for injections and sodium ions.

Contraindications

The medicine must not be used if the child is allergic to phytomenadione (vitamin K1) or any of the other ingredients of the medicine.

Dosage

This medicine should always be used exactly as described or after consulting a doctor, pharmacist or healthcare professional.For healthy newborns born at or near the due date, there are two options: a single injection of 1 mg of phytomenadione at birth or a first oral dose of 2 mg at birth, followed by two additional doses after 4-7 days and after a month.For newborns at particular risk of bleeding, the medicine is given as an injection at or shortly after birth.Additional injections may be given later if there is still a risk of bleeding.

For the treatment of vitamin K deficiency bleeding, the initial dose is 1 mg phytomenadione intravenously in full-term infants or 0.4 mg/kg body weight in premature infants.If necessary, further doses can be given depending on the clinical picture and the coagulation status.The treatment can be accompanied by additional measures.

Intake

The medicine can be either dripped into the mouth or administered intramuscularly or intravenously.The method of use depends on what the medicine is being used for and whether the child was born prematurely.For oral administration, the clear solution is placed directly into the infant's mouth using a dispenser or syringe.When administered parenterally, the preparation must not be diluted or mixed with other drugs.The intravenous administration should be given particularly slowly to ensure that the injection solution is strongly diluted with the bloodstream.

It is recommended to speak to a doctor, pharmacist or healthcare professional before using the medicine.In newborns at particular risk, the solution should be administered intramuscularly, as intravenous administration may be associated with a temporary reduction in the level of protein binding of bilirubin in the blood.

Pregnancy

There is no information regarding the use of the drug during pregnancy.

The Nutrition Commission of the German Society for Pediatrics recommends vitamin K prophylaxis for all children to prevent later vitamin K deficiency bleeding.Vitamin K1 is found in various foods, and the minimum daily requirement is covered by daily food.Deficiency symptoms can be caused by a true deficiency of vitamin K or by the use of anticoagulants.

Vitamin K1 is important for the body's production of many coagulation factors and is therefore important for blood clotting.It should only be used under medical supervision.
