Sodium bicarbonate 8.4% B. Braun concentrate is a solution used to correct metabolic acidosis.It is also used for urinary alkalinization in various medical indications, such as poisoning with weak organic acids, to improve the solubility of certain drugs and in hemolysis.The concentrate contains 1 mmol/ml sodium and 1 mmol/ml hydrogen carbonate and is available in glass ampoules.

Ingredients

Active ingredient per 20 ml concentrate (= 1 ampoule): 1.68 g sodium bicarbonate, which corresponds to 20 mmol sodium ion and 20 mmol bicarbonate ion.Other ingredients: Water for injections.

Areas of application

Sodium hydrogen carbonate 8.4% B. Braun concentrate is used to correct hyperacidification of the blood (metabolic acidosis) and to increase the pH value of the urine (urinary alkalinization) in the event of poisoning with weak organic acids, to improve the solubility of medications that are poorly soluble in neutral and acidic environments and in hemolysis.

Application

This medicine is used by a doctor or healthcare professional.The dosage depends on the extent of the disruption to the acid-base status and is determined individually.The maximum infusion rate is approximately 1.5 ml of sodium bicarbonate 8.4% B. Braun concentrate per kg of body weight and hour.It is used intravenously as an infusion into a vein, after dilution in a carrier solution.

Side effects

Like all medicines, sodium hydrogen carbonate 8.4% B. Braun concentrate can have side effects, although not everyone gets them.Possible side effects include increased sodium levels in the blood (hypernatremia) and excessive salt concentration in the blood.If you notice any side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Storage

Keep medicines out of the reach of children.You may no longer use the medicine after the expiry date stated on the outer carton and container after “Use by” or “Use by:”.The expiry date refers to the last day of the month.Storage conditions: Sodium bicarbonate 8.4% B. Braun concentrate is an almost saturated solution.It should therefore not be stored below room temperature.Any crystals can be dissolved by heating.Opened solutions must be used immediately.Leftovers must be discarded.To be used only if the container is intact and the solution is clear.
