Instructions for use for the article Sodium hydrogen carbonate 8.4% infusion solution
Sodium hydrogen carbonate 8.4% infusion solution is a medicine that is used to correct hyperacidity of the blood (metabolic acidosis) and to increase the pH of the urine (urinary alkalinization). It is used for poisoning with weak organic acids, to improve the solubility of certain medications and for the breakdown of red blood cells (hemolysis). No prescription is required for this product.
Active ingredient and composition
The active ingredient is sodium hydrogen carbonate (sodium bicarbonate).1000 ml of infusion solution contains sodium bicarbonate 84.0 g.The other ingredients are sodium edetate and water for injections. The solution contains electrolytes such as sodium ion and hydrogen carbonate ion.The theoretical osmolarity is 2000 mOsm/l and the pH is between 7.0 and 8.5.
Areas of application
Sodium bicarbonate 8.4% infusion solution is used to correct hyperacidity of the blood (metabolic acidosis) and to increase the pH of the urine (urinary alkalinization). This includes treating poisoning with weak organic acids, improving the solubility of certain medications, and treating red blood cell breakdown (hemolysis).
Contraindications
Sodium hydrogen carbonate 8.4% infusion solution must not be used if there is an excess of alkali in the blood (alkalosis), a low potassium level in the blood (hypokalemia) and an increased sodium level in the blood (hypernatremia).
Special precautions
Particular caution is required in cases of slowed or shallow breathing (hypoventilation), low calcium levels in the blood (hypocalcemia), conditions with increased salt concentration in the blood (hyperosmolarity) and diseases that require restricted sodium intake, such as heart failure, fluid accumulation in the tissues, pulmonary edema, high blood pressure, eclampsia and severe renal impairment.
Use with other medicines
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or using other medicines, especially adrenal hormones, androgens and diuretics that increase potassium excretion.Increasing the pH value of the urine can influence the excretion of certain drugs.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.Sodium bicarbonate can be used during pregnancy if your doctor thinks it is absolutely necessary.During breastfeeding it should only be used after carefully weighing the benefits and risks.
Dosage and application
This medicine is used by a doctor or healthcare professional. The dosage depends on the extent of the acid-base status disorder and body weight. For children and newborns, the dosage is determined individually. The solution is administered intravenously as an infusion and should be diluted. The maximum infusion rate is approximately 1.5 ml per kg body weight per hour.
Side effects
Possible side effects include increased blood sodium levels and excessive blood salt concentration. If you notice any side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Storage
Keep medicines out of the reach of children. The medicine must not be used after the expiry date stated on the outer carton and container. The solution should not be stored below room temperature.Opened solutions must be used immediately.
