Sodium bicarbonate 8.4% B. Braun infusion solution is a medicine that is used to correct hyperacidity of the blood (metabolic acidosis) and to increase the pH of the urine (urinary alkalinization).It can be used in cases of poisoning with weak organic acids, to improve the solubility of certain medications and in cases of breakdown of red blood cells (hemolysis).No prescription is required for this product.
The infusion solution contains the active ingredient sodium hydrogen carbonate (sodium bicarbonate).1000 ml of the solution contains sodium hydrogen carbonate (sodium bicarbonate) 84.0 g.The other ingredients are sodium edetate (Ph. Eur.) 50 mg and water for injections.The electrolytes in the solution are sodium ion (1000 mmol/l) and hydrogen carbonate ion (1000 mmol/l).The theoretical osmolarity is 2000 mOsm/l and the pH is between 7.0 and 8.5.
Areas of application
Sodium bicarbonate 8.4% B. Braun infusion solution is used to correct hyperacidification of the blood (metabolic acidosis) and to increase the pH of the urine (urinary alkalinization) in various medical indications.These include poisoning with weak organic acids such as barbiturates and acetylsalicylic acid, the improvement in the solubility of drugs such as methotrexate and sulfonamides, and the breakdown of red blood cells (hemolysis).
Contraindications
Sodium hydrogen carbonate 8.4% B. Braun must not be used if there is an excess of alkali in the blood (alkalosis), a low potassium level in the blood (hypokalemia) and an increased sodium level in the blood (hypernatremia).Particular caution is required in cases of slowed or shallow breathing (hypoventilation), reduced calcium levels in the blood (hypocalcemia) and conditions with increased salt concentrations in the blood (hyperosmolarity).Caution is also advised in diseases that require restricted sodium intake, such as heart failure (heart failure), fluid accumulation in the tissues (generalized edema), fluid accumulation in the lungs (pulmonary edema), high blood pressure (hypertension), eclampsia and severe kidney dysfunction (renal insufficiency).
Application and dosage
This medicine is used by a doctor or healthcare professional.The dosage depends on the extent of the acid-base status disorder and the patient's body weight.For children and newborns, the dosage is determined individually.The infusion solution is administered intravenously and should only be used diluted as an addition to infusion solutions.The maximum infusion rate should not exceed 1.5 ml sodium bicarbonate 8.4% B. Braun per kg body weight and hour.
Side effects
Like all medicines, sodium hydrogen carbonate 8.4% B. Braun can have side effects, although not everyone gets them.Possible side effects include increased sodium levels in the blood (hypernatremia) and excessive salt levels in the blood.If you notice any side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Storage
Keep medicines out of the reach of children.You must not use the medicine after the expiry date stated on the carton and container.Sodium bicarbonate 8.4% B. Braun is an almost saturated solution and should not be stored below room temperature.Any crystals can be dissolved by heating.Opened solutions must be used immediately.Leftovers must be discarded.To be used only if the container is intact and the solution is clear.
