BicaNorm gastro-resistant tablets are used to treat metabolic acidification of the blood (metabolic acidosis) in chronic underperformance of the kidneys (chronic renal insufficiency and renal tubular acidosis).They are also used as maintenance therapy to prevent metabolic acidification of the blood from recurring.No prescription is required for this product.

Mode of action

BicaNorm gastro-resistant tablets belong to the group of acidosis therapeutics.The active ingredient sodium hydrogen carbonate is a salt that helps to increase the pH value in the organism and thus works against acidification of the blood.This helps to balance the acid-base balance in the blood and normalize the pH value.

One BicaNorm tablet contains 1000 mg sodium bicarbonate, which corresponds to 11.9 mmol sodium ions and 11.9 mmol bicarbonate ions.The other ingredients are poly(O-carboxymethyl) starch, sodium salt, microcrystalline cellulose, copovidone, potato starch, colloidal silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate (vegetable), hypromellose, titanium dioxide (E171), macrogol 6000, talc, methacrylic acid-ethyl acrylate copolymer (1:1) and sodium hydroxide.

Contraindications

BicaNorm must not be taken if you are allergic to sodium bicarbonate or any of the other ingredients, have an increased pH value in the blood and body fluids (alkalosis), have a low potassium level in the blood, have an increased sodium level in the blood or are on a low-salt (low-sodium) diet.Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking BicaNorm if you have reduced breathing (hypoventilation), low calcium levels in the blood (hypocalcemia) or certain water and electrolyte imbalances (hyperosmolar disorders).

Dosage

The dosage of BicaNorm depends on the severity of your symptoms and will be adjusted depending on how you respond to the medication.The usual dosage for adults is initially 2-3 tablets daily, taken in several doses throughout the day.The maintenance dose can be up to 8 tablets daily.The tablets should be swallowed whole and uncrushed with a little liquid.The duration of use is determined by your doctor.

Notes

One enteric-coated tablet contains approximately 11.9 mmol (273 mg) sodium.If you need to follow a low-salt diet, you should take this into account.Dietary supplements are not a substitute for a balanced and varied diet.BicaNorm should be kept out of the reach of children.The daily recommended consumption amount should not be exceeded.

Side effects

Like all medicines, BicaNorm can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. Possible side effects include bloating, abdominal pain, hypocalcemic tetany after increased doses, and the formation of kidney stones after prolonged use.If you notice any side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Storage

Keep BicaNorm out of the reach of children and do not store it above 30°C.Do not use the medicine after the expiry date stated on the package.Do not throw away medicines via wastewater or household waste.Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicine when you no longer use it.
