Sodium bicarbonate solution 8.4% Köhler, solution for infusion
Sodium hydrogen carbonate solution 8.4% Köhler is a corrective electrolyte solution that is used to treat acidosis.The solution is used to treat metabolic acidosis, as well as alkalinization in barbiturate and salicylate poisoning.No prescription is required for this product.
Areas of application
The 8.4% Köhler sodium hydrogen carbonate solution is used for metabolic acidosis and for alkalinization in barbiturate and salicylate poisoning.
Contraindications
The solution must not be used in cases of alkalosis, hypernatremia and hypokalemia.It should not be used together with solutions containing calcium and magnesium or mixed with solutions containing phosphates.
Dosage instructions
Unless otherwise prescribed, the solution should be administered as a continuous drip up to a maximum of 25 drops per minute and 100 ml per day, taking the acid-base balance into account.The dosage can be calculated using the following formula: ml sodium bicarbonate solution 8.4% = bicarbonate deficit (mEq/l x kg body weight x 0.3).The solution can be infused undiluted or diluted with glucose solution 5% in the same volume ratio.
Type of application
Köhler's sodium bicarbonate solution 8.4% is used for intravenous infusion.
Side effects
If the contraindications and instructions are followed, there are no known side effects.
Notes
Paravenous application can result in necrosis.Controls of the acid-base balance and the serum ionogram are required.Caution is advised in the event of hypokalemia.If the dose is exceeded, there is a risk of hypocalcemic tetany.
Type of storage
The solution should be protected from light and not stored above 25°C.After the expiry date, the medicine should no longer be used.Medicines should be kept out of the reach of children.
Composition
Medicinally active ingredient: 20 ml of infusion solution contains 1.68 g of sodium hydrogen carbonate.Other ingredients: edetic acid, disodium salt, 2 H20, water for injections.
Dosage form and pack sizes
Ampoules of 20 ml in packs of 1 x 5 ampoules, 1 x 10 ampoules, 1 x 25 ampoules, 50 (2 x 25) ampoules and 100 (4 x 25) ampoules.
Note on dilution
Sodium bicarbonate solution 8.4% Köhler can be diluted and infused in the same volume ratio or with a larger volume, such as 50 ml, 100 ml or 250 ml, of an isotonic saline solution (NaCl 0.9%).
