Omacor 1000 mg – for the treatment of elevated blood lipid levels

Hypertriglyceridaemia is a disorder of lipid metabolism characterized by elevated triglyceride concentrations in the blood, which may be associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).Blood lipid levels can be lowered through dietary changes combined with drug therapy.Omacor is a high-dose omega-3 product used in cases of increased risk of vascular disease.The usual dosage is 2 to 4 capsules daily.

Therapeutic indication

Omacor contains highly purified polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids and belongs to a group of medicines that lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels.It is used for prevention following a heart attack, in addition to other standard treatments, as well as for the treatment of certain forms of elevated blood lipid levels (endogenous hypertriglyceridaemia) when appropriate dietary measures alone are insufficient.No prescription is required for this product.

Active substances / ingredients / constituents

1 g of omega-3-acid ethyl esters 90 contains 460 mg of icosapent ethyl and 380 mg of doconexent ethyl.Excipients include: 3-sn-phosphatidylcholine (soybean), gelatin, glycerol, 4 mg RRR-alpha-tocopherol, soybean oil, medium-chain triglycerides, and purified water.

Contraindications

The medicine must not be taken if you are allergic to the active substance or any of the other ingredients.If this applies to you, you should not take the preparation and should consult your doctor.

Dosage

Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you.For prevention after a heart attack, the usual dose is 1 capsule per day.For the treatment of high blood lipid levels, the usual dose is 2 capsules daily.If the effect is insufficient, the dose may be increased to 4 capsules per day.Your doctor will decide how long you should take the medicine.

If you have taken more than the intended amount, special treatment is generally not required.In such a case, please contact your doctor or pharmacist.If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as possible, unless it is already time for your next dose.Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

Administration

Swallow the capsules with a glass of water.It is recommended to take the capsules with meals to avoid gastrointestinal side effects.

Patient information

Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine if you are due to undergo or have recently undergone surgery, have suffered an injury, have kidney or liver problems, have diabetes, or have a fish allergy.Elderly people should exercise caution when taking the medicine, and it should not be taken by children.

It is unlikely that this medicine will affect your ability to drive or use machines.

Pregnancy

The product should not be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless your doctor considers it absolutely necessary.Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine.

Notes

The product is not indicated for certain forms of elevated blood lipid levels (exogenous hypertriglyceridaemia, particularly type I hyperchylomicronaemia).There is limited experience regarding certain forms of elevated blood lipid levels (secondary endogenous hypertriglyceridaemia, particularly in cases of untreated diabetes).There is no experience regarding the treatment of hypertriglyceridaemia in combination with fibrates.

Do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the pack or outer carton.The expiry date refers to the last day of the month indicated.
