Accutrend Cholesterol Test Strips are test strips used for quantitative cholesterol determination from fresh or heparinised fresh capillary blood. They are only compatible with certain measuring devices such as the Accutrend GC, Accutrend GCT or Accutrend Plus. Cholesterol determination can provide the doctor with initial information about a patient's lipid metabolism and give indications for further diagnostic measures, therapy decisions or follow-up. However, self-monitoring with these test strips cannot replace a doctor's check-up. The way it works is that each test strip contains a test field with detection reagents. As soon as blood is applied, a chemical reaction takes place and the test field changes colour. The meter detects this colour change and converts the measurement signal into the measurement result with the help of the code strip. It is important to use only the above-mentioned measuring devices for the measurement in order to avoid erroneous readings. Also, before each measurement, the test strips that can be used should be checked by checking the bluish tinged window on the back of the test strip. The test pads should be completely covered with blood. Furthermore, the measuring devices must be recoded with the supplied code strip when a new test strip pack is opened. Test GCT strips should be stored at 2-30°C and should not be used beyond the expiry date. Accutrend Control CH 1 can be used for quality control. Cholesterol determination may be interfered with by certain substances such as ascorbic acid, high bilirubin levels, a high haematocrit, methylaminoantipyrine and gentisic acid. The linear measurement range is 3.88-7.76 mmol/L or 150-300 mg/dL and the detection limit is 3.88 mmol/L or 150 mg/dL. The reference values for cholesterol are usually below 5.2 mmol/L or 200 mg/dL.
