Our eyelids play a crucial role in the health of our eyes.They offer mechanical protection and distribute the tear film evenly over the surface of the eye when you blink.The meibomian glands on the edge of the eyelid produce a fatty film that protects and stabilizes the tear film.Meibomian gland dysfunction (MDD) can lead to dry eyes because production in the glands is disrupted and they become blocked.Changes to the eyelids, for example due to skin diseases such as atopy or blepharitis or after surgery, can lead to a vicious circle of inflammation and dryness if left untreated.

Instructions on how to properly clean the eyelids

Before cleaning your eyelids, wash your hands thoroughly so as not to irritate the sensitive mucous membranes.Place moist, warm compresses, such as cotton pads, on your closed eyes for a few minutes.Blocked secretions in the meibomian glands are liquefied.To express secretions that have accumulated in the glands on the lower eyelid, look up and gently massage the skin at the base of the eyelashes of the lower eyelid with one finger in a circular motion.To use on the upper eyelid, close your eye and massage the skin at the base of the eyelashes in circular movements with gentle pressure from your index finger.You can also use a damp cotton swab to spread the liquid secretion from top to bottom.To clean the eyelid edges, take a cleaning cloth ILAST Wipes out of the packaging and wrap it around your index finger.With your eyes closed, gently massage the eyelid and eyelashes from the inside out in circular movements.
