HIRUDOID® Ointment - support for venous diseases

Swollen veins, which lead to varicose veins, are uncomfortable for many people.Although they can theoretically occur in all veins of the body, in 90 percent of cases they manifest themselves in the legs.These venous diseases are among the most common in Germany, with women being affected two to four times more often than men.However, only around twelve percent of those affected have varicose veins so severe that medical treatment is necessary.

In most cases, sufficient exercise, avoiding extreme heat such as saunas or sunbathing, and alternating showers that promote blood circulation can help as preventative measures.The rule “It’s better to lie or walk than sit or stand” also helps to reduce the risk of venous diseases. HIRUDOID® Ointment supports the healing of superficial venous diseases.

Effect and application

HIRUDOID® Ointment contains deeply penetrating chondroitin polysulfate, which inhibits inflammation directly at the site of inflammation.It reduces swelling and promotes tissue regeneration.The ointment can be used as a cooling gel or as an ointment for ointment dressings.

Active ingredients and ingredients

The ointment contains 3 mg of chondroitin polysulfate per gram, which corresponds to 250 APTT-units.Other ingredients include cetostearyl alcohol (emulsifying, type A), glycerol 85%, isopropyl alcohol, potassium hydroxide, myristyl alcohol, stearic acid, thymol, purified water, wool wax alcohol ointment, methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate and propyl 4-hydroxybenzoate.

Contraindications

The medicine must not be used if you are hypersensitive to chondroitin polysulfate or any of the other ingredients.Do not use the ointment on open wounds or broken skin.

Dosage and application

Apply the HIRUDOID® ointment to the affected area 2 to 3 times daily, or more often if necessary.A strand of ointment measuring 3 to 5 cm is usually sufficient.The ointment should be applied evenly to the affected area and, if possible, massaged gently into the skin.Use the ointment only on uninjured skin and avoid contact with the eyes or mucous membranes.

In the case of particularly painful inflammation, the affected area and its surroundings should be carefully coated with the ointment and covered with a bandage.In these cases, the ointment should not be rubbed in.The ointment is also suitable for physical treatment procedures such as iontophoresis and phonophoresis.During iontophoresis, the ointment is applied under the cathode.

The application should be continued until the symptoms have subsided.The duration of treatment is up to 10 days for blunt injuries and one to two weeks for superficial phlebitis.If the symptoms have not improved after 14 days of regular use or if symptoms reoccur after treatment has been completed, please consult your doctor.

Notes

The ointment contains cetostearyl alcohol, methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate, propyl 4-hydroxybenzoate and wool wax.Please do not use the medicine after the expiry date stated on the pack.The expiry date refers to the last day of the specified month.
