Instructions for use for Acimethine film-coated tablets (25 pieces)
Area of application
This medicine is a physiological urological drug used to acidify urine. It has a bacteriostatic effect in urinary tract infections and can also be used for prevention in patients with neurogenic bladder dysfunction. It also optimizes the effect of antibiotics that are particularly effective in acidic urine (pH 4-6), such as ampicillin, carbenicillin, sulfonamides, nalidixic acid and nitrofurantoin.Another area of application is the prevention of the formation of new phosphate stones such as struvite, carbonate apatite and brushite.
Active ingredients and ingredients
The active ingredient of this medicine is methionine at a dosage of 500 mg per film-coated tablet. The excipients include carboxymethyl starch, sodium salt type A, microcrystalline cellulose, crospovidone, iron (III) oxide, Eudragit E 100, hypromellose, macrogol 6000, magnesium stearate (vegetable), povidone K30, silicon dioxide, colloidal silicon dioxide, talc, titanium dioxide and 1 mmol total sodium ion.
Contraindications
This medicine must not be taken if you are allergic to methionine or any of the other ingredients. Its use is also contraindicated in certain metabolic diseases such as homocysteinuria, uric acid and cystine stone disorders, renal insufficiency, oxalosis and methionine adenosyltransferase deficiency. It is also not suitable for metabolic acidosis and for infants.
Dosage
Always take this medicine exactly as described or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.Unless directed by a doctor, the recommended dose is generally 1 to 2 film-coated tablets 3 times daily. For rapid urinary acidification, therapy can be started with 2 film-coated tablets 3 times daily. In special cases and on doctor's orders, higher doses can be taken. The therapeutic aim is for the urine to have a pH value of less than pH 6, although the effect can only occur after 5 to 6 days. There are no sufficient studies available for children under 12 years of age, so the medicine should not be used at this age.
The duration of use is determined by the doctor and depends on the therapeutic need.No prescription is required for this product.
To date, no intoxications have occurred in the event of an overdose, as methionine is an amino acid naturally found in many foods. If you forget to take a dose, do not take a double dose.
If you have any further questions about taking it, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Intake
The film-coated tablets are swallowed whole with a little liquid before meals.
Patient information
Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking the medicine.Patients with liver dysfunction or hepatogenic encephalopathy should not take methionine due to the risk of synthesis of neurotoxic mercaptans in bacterial metabolism. If there is a deficiency of folic acid, vitamin B2, B6 and/or B12, treatment with methionine can lead to an increase in homocysteine levels. It is therefore important to ensure an adequate supply of these vitamins. If the thyroid is underactive, thyroid function should be checked before treatment.Methionine exposure can lead to increased calcium excretion in the urine, which is why the mineral balance should be checked regularly during long-term treatment.Patients at risk of acidosis should have their blood acid-base balance checked regularly.
Pregnancy
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine. There are insufficient data to support the use of methionine during pregnancy and breastfeeding.Pregnant and breastfeeding women should only take the medicine after a doctor has carefully weighed the benefits and risks.
Notes
If you have a vitamin B and folic acid deficiency or an underactive thyroid, you should consult your doctor before taking it.During long-term treatment, the mineral balance, especially the calcium level, should be monitored.
