However, portioning with a kitchen knife or other sharp tools is just a matter of luck.Patients are often not aware that unequally divided tablets can lead to underdosing or overdosing and even loss of therapy.There is also the risk of injuring yourself when handling the sharp knife and the sometimes small tablets.

Make two out of one

With the Exakt tablet divider, almost all tablets can be portioned in no time.Medications are placed in the lower part of the device between the two converging holding bars.Tilt the pill divider slightly so that the medication slides as far into the V-shaped plastic bars as possible.Fold down the top part of the device with light pressure and a blade in the lid will cut the tablet into pieces without much effort.Now simply turn the device over until one half of the tablet falls out of the ejection slot.The second half of the tablet is stored well in the storage compartment, protected from light and safe.

Sharing allowed?

Whether a tablet is suitable for sharing depends on various factors.Depending on the active ingredient or form, portioning the medicine is possible or not.Rapidly disintegrating tablets or water-soluble film-coated tablets are easy to divide, so-called prolonged-release tablets only to a limited extent.However, soft or hard gelatin capsules, sugar coated tablets and coated tablets must not be crushed at all.This also applies to enteric-coated tablets or delayed-release film-coated tablets.

It is best to ask the doctor or pharmacist specifically whether the prescribed tablets can be split and what special features, such as the light sensitivity of the active ingredients, need to be taken into account.The package insert or medication packaging can also contain information about this, but under current regulations it does not have to.
