Gelafusal is an infusion solution used for the prophylaxis and therapy of volume deficiency and shock and for blood thinning before surgery. It is a 4% modified gelatine in Ringer's acetate infusion solution for volume replacement. Certain contraindications should be noted before use, such as hyperhydration, hypervolaemia, severe heart failure, renal insufficiency, hypersensitivity to gelatin and bleeding disorders. Certain warnings and precautions should also be observed during use. The dosage and infusion rate should be adjusted individually. Possible side effects may occur during use, such as hypersensitivity reactions, skin reactions, temperature increase, blood pressure changes and nausea. In rare cases, more severe side effects may occur. The solution should be clear and the expiry date should be observed. Gelafusal is administered intravenously. An exact dosage and duration of use should be determined by the doctor. Medical advice should be sought if side effects occur.
