Colina is a powder for the preparation of a suspension used for the symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhoea. It contains the active ingredient smectite (dioctahedral), a purified clay earth mineral with a three-layer structure. Colina stabilises the protective film of the intestinal mucosa and strengthens it against aggressive factors. The dosage varies according to age: children over 2 years of age take 1 sachet 2-4 times a day, while adults take 1-2 sachets 3 times a day. The total dose should not be exceeded without consulting a doctor or pharmacist. The powder is either drunk dissolved in water or taken mixed with semi-liquid food. The duration of treatment should not be longer than 7 days without medical advice. Colina must not be used if there is hypersensitivity to smectite (dioctahedral), soya, peanut or any other component of the preparation. During pregnancy and lactation, a doctor should be consulted before using Colina. Possible side effects include temporary constipation and allergic reactions. In case of overdose, severe constipation and stomach stones may occur, so a doctor should be contacted immediately if an overdose is suspected.
