Description of the product

Ozym 40000 is a medicine that contains digestive enzymes from the pancreas of pigs.These enzymes are known as pancreatic powder or pancreatin.The product is used to treat digestive disorders caused by reduced or absent pancreatic function.No prescription is required for this product.

Active ingredients and ingredients

The active ingredient in Ozym 40000 is porcine pancreas powder.One enteric-coated hard capsule contains between 319.05 and 414.35 mg of this pancreas powder, which corresponds to the following activities: lipase activity of 40,000 Ph. Eur. units, amylase activity of at least 25,000 Ph. Eur. units and protease activity of at least 1,500 Ph. Eur. units.

The other ingredients of the capsules are methacrylic acid-ethyl acrylate copolymer (1:1) dispersion 30% (Ph. Eur.), Simeticon emulsion (containing Simeticon, methylcellulose, sorbic acid (Ph. Eur.) and water), talc, triethyl citrate, gelatin and sodium dodecyl sulfate.

Contraindications

Ozym 40000 should not be used if there is hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients or if there is acute inflammation of the pancreas.It is also not suitable for use in the event of an acute attack of chronic inflammation of the pancreas during the fully developed phase of the disease.However, in the decline phase during the dietary build-up (bland diet), its use can occasionally be useful if digestive problems persist.

Dosage and intake

The recommended dose is one capsule per meal, which corresponds to 40,000 Ph. Eur. units of lipase per meal.The dosage depends on the severity of the indigestion and may therefore be higher.The dose should only be increased under medical supervision and should be aimed at improving the symptoms of the disease.A daily enzyme dose of 15,000 to 20,000 Ph. Eur. units of lipase per kilogram of body weight should not be exceeded.

Take the preparation whole with plenty of liquid, preferably in the middle of the meal.The preparation should not be taken while lying down.Patients who do not want to swallow the entire capsule can open it over a suitable container and only swallow the contents with a little liquid without chewing.Make sure that the capsules or the pellets they contain are swallowed whole, as the preparation loses its effectiveness when chewed and the enzymes it contains can damage the mucous membrane if released into the oral cavity.You should always drink plenty of fluids (water or juice).

Patient information

If you suffer from cystic fibrosis and therefore take high doses of pork pancreas powder, there is a possibility that intestinal strictures may form in individual cases.These narrowings can potentially lead to an intestinal obstruction.Symptoms of an intestinal obstruction can include nausea and vomiting, belching, flatulence with stool retention and wind in connection with (severe) colicky pain.If severe and unusual symptoms occur in the digestive tract, you should consult a doctor immediately.

If you experience any unusual gastrointestinal symptoms or changes in symptoms, you should have them examined by your doctor as a precautionary measure to rule out the possibility of intestinal damage.This particularly affects patients who take over 10,000 Ph. Eur. units of lipase per kg of body weight every day.

The preparation has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines.

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.There is insufficient experience with the use of the drug in pregnant women.If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, you should not take this medicine unless your doctor considers it absolutely necessary.

Special Notes

In cystic fibrosis, increased uric acid excretion in the urine may occur after taking large amounts of the drug.Therefore, in this case, uric acid excretion in the urine should be controlled to avoid the formation of uric acid stones.Narrowings in the intestinal canal are known complications of cystic fibrosis.If symptoms similar to intestinal obstruction are present, the possibility of intestinal strictures should also be taken into account.
