Rickets has been known as a painful bone disease in children for many centuries.Due to a lack of mineralization, the bones of affected children remain soft, deformed and cannot fulfill their full function.It was only in the middle of the last century that scientists were able to figure out what the “rickets children” were missing: vitamin D, a vitamin produced naturally in the skin by sunlight.Since vitamin D supports the absorption of calcium into the bones, it is hardly surprising that a vitamin D deficiency can lead to various bone diseases.

Although humans can produce vitamin D themselves in the body, the prerequisite for this is that enough UV-light hits the skin.Only then is the body's own production of vitamin D sufficient to optimally control the absorption of minerals into the bones and ensure healthy bones.This is why vitamin D is often simply called the “sunshine vitamin”.

When it comes to vitamin D supply, Germany is still an area of deficiency.In a study, around half of all Germans had low levels of vitamin D in their blood.

The administration of vitamin D3 is not just a requirement for the first two years of life, but is important for health throughout our lives.

Dekristol® 400 I.U. is approved for the prevention of rickets in premature babies, for the prevention of rickets and osteomalacia or if there is a recognizable risk of vitamin D deficiency in children, adolescents and adults and for the supportive treatment of osteoporosis in adults.

Area of application

Dekristol 400 IU tablets is a dietary supplement with vitamin D3, which is involved in bone formation.The active ingredient colecalciferol is identical to the colecalciferol found in the human organism.

Areas of application: Dekristol 400 IU tablets are used to prevent rickets, to prevent apparent risk of vitamin D deficiency in otherwise healthy people without absorption disorders, to support the treatment of osteoporosis and to prevent rickets in premature babies.

Mode of action

Dekristol 400 IU tablets contains vitamin D3 (colecalciferol), which regulates the absorption and metabolism of calcium as well as the incorporation of calcium into the bone tissue.

Ingredients of Dekristol 400 IU tablets: Active ingredient: colecalciferol.One tablet contains 4.0 mg colecalciferol dry concentrate (corresponding to 0.01 mg or 400 IU vitamin D3).Other ingredients: Sucrose, gelatin, modified starch (corn), potato starch, medium-chain triglycerides, butylhydroxytoluene (E321), sodium aluminosilicate, lactose monohydrate, precipitated silicon dioxide, talc, magnesium stearate (Ph.Eur.).

Contraindications

Dekristol 400 IU tablets must not be taken if you are hypersensitive to colecalciferol or any of the other ingredients of the preparation, if you have hypercalcemia and/or hypercalciuria, if you have been diagnosed with hypervitaminosis D or if you have kidney stones.

Dosage

Recommended use of Dekristol 400 IU tablets: Adults should take the tablets whole with sufficient liquid.Infants and young children can dissolve the tablet(s) on a teaspoon with water and put the dissolved tablet directly into the child's mouth, ideally during a meal.

To prevent rickets: 1 tablet of Dekristol 400 IU tablets daily (corresponding to 0.01 mg or 400 IU vitamin D).To prevent a vitamin D deficiency disease / To prevent a recognizable risk of a vitamin D deficiency disease in otherwise healthy people without absorption disorders: 1 tablet of Dekristol 400 IU tablets daily (corresponding to 0.01 mg or 400 IU vitamin D).For supportive treatment of osteoporosis: 2 tablets of Dekristol 400 IU tablets daily (corresponding to 0.02 mg or 800 IU vitamin D).To prevent rickets in premature babies: The dosage for preventing rickets in premature babies must be determined by the attending physician.In general, 2 tablets of Dekristol 400 IU tablets (equivalent to 0.02 mg or 800 IU vitamin D) are recommended.

Intake

Take the tablets with enough water, preferably with a meal.For infants and small children, the tablets can be dissolved on a teaspoon with water or milk and the dissolved tablet can be given directly into the child's mouth, ideally during a meal.The tablet disintegration takes 1-2 minutes. The disintegration can be accelerated by gently moving the teaspoon.Adding the tablets to a bottle or porridge meal for infants is not recommended, as complete vitamin D intake cannot be guaranteed.If the tablets are to be administered with food, they should only be added after the food has been boiled and then cooled.

Patient information

Particular caution is required when taking the drug if you have a tendency to form calcium-containing kidney stones, if your kidney excretion of calcium and phosphate is impaired, if you are being treated with benzothiadiazine derivatives and if you are immobilized.Blood and urine calcium levels should be monitored.If you suffer from sarcoidosis, as there is a risk of increased conversion of vitamin D to its active form.Blood and urine calcium levels should be monitored.In pseudohypoparathyroidism, as the vitamin D requirement can be reduced due to the occasional normal vitamin D sensitivity, with the risk of a long-term overdose.

During long-term treatment with the preparation, calcium levels in the blood and urine should be monitored regularly and renal function should be checked by measuring serum creatinine.This review is particularly important in elderly patients and during concurrent treatment with cardiac glycosides or diuretics.In case of hypercalcemia or signs of reduced renal function, the dose must be reduced or treatment interrupted.It is recommended to reduce the dose or interrupt treatment if the urinary calcium level exceeds 7.5 mmol/24 hours (300 mg/24 hours).

If other medicines containing vitamin D are prescribed, the dose of vitamin D in the preparation must be taken into account.Additional administration of vitamin D or calcium should only be given under medical supervision.In such cases, calcium levels in the blood and urine must be monitored.In patients with impaired renal function being treated with the drug, the effect on calcium and phosphate balance should be monitored.The medicine should be used with particular caution in infants and young children as they may not be able to swallow the tablets and may choke.It is recommended to dissolve the tablets as directed instead.

No special precautions are required regarding the ability to drive and use machines.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy: During pregnancy, the medicine should only be taken according to strict indications and only in the dosage that is absolutely necessary to correct the deficiency.Overdoses of vitamin D during pregnancy must be prevented, as long-term hypercalcemia can lead to physical and mental disability as well as congenital heart and eye diseases in the child.Breastfeeding: Vitamin D and its metabolites pass into breast milk.An overdose in infants caused in this way has not been observed.
