Pancreatin Mikro-ratiopharm is used to treat exocrine pancreatic insufficiency.In this condition, the pancreas does not produce enough enzymes to digest food.The preparation contains an enzyme mixture called pancreas powder, also called pancreatin.This enzyme mixture supports digestion and is obtained from pig pancreas.The small gastro-resistant microfilm tablets slowly release the pancreas powder into the intestine.

Each hard capsule contains 195.2 mg of porcine pancreas powder, corresponding to 20,000 Ph.Eur. units of lipase, at least 15,000 Ph.Eur. units of amylase and at least 900 Ph.Eur. units of protease.In addition, the preparation contains the following excipients: cellulose, microcrystalline, crospovidone, iron hydroxide, iron oxide, Eudragit L 30 D-55, gelatin, magnesium stearate, montan glycol wax, sodium dodecyl sulfate, polysorbate 80, silicon dioxide, highly disperse, Simeticon emulsion, Simeticon, methylcellulose, sorbic acid, purified water, talc, titanium dioxide,Triethyl citrate, purified water and less than 1 mmol (23 mg) sodium per dosage unit.

Area of application

Pancreatin Mikro-ratiopharm is used to treat exocrine pancreatic insufficiency.This condition occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough enzymes to digest food.The preparation can be used in children, adolescents and adults.Treatment with this drug improves symptoms of pancreatic exocrine insufficiency, including stool consistency, abdominal pain, flatulence, and stool frequency.If you don't feel better after five days or even feel worse, you should consult a doctor.

How the product works

The enzymes in this medicine help digest food as it passes through the intestines.You should take the supplement during or immediately after a meal or snack to allow the enzymes to mix thoroughly with the food.

Contraindications

This medicine must not be taken if you are allergic to pancreatin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

Dosage

Always take this medicine exactly as described or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.The dosage is given in units of lipase, which is one of the enzymes in pancreas powder.Different strengths of the preparation contain different amounts of lipase.Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose for you based on the severity of your condition, your weight, your diet and the amount of fat in your stool.

If you continue to have fatty stools or other stomach or intestinal problems, you should speak to your doctor as your dosage may need to be adjusted.

For children, the strength of this drug may not be appropriate for initiating therapy depending on the child's age and weight.The required dose for a child should be determined by the doctor using dosage forms containing fewer lipase units.Once the dose per meal has been established, this strength of the drug can be used in children.The usual starting dose for children under four years of age is 1,000 lipase units per kilogram of body weight per meal, and for children aged four and over it is 500 lipase units per kilogram of body weight per meal.

In adolescents and adults, weight-based enzyme dosing should begin with 500 lipase units per kilogram of body weight per meal.The usual meal dose is between 25,000 and 80,000 lipase units, and the usual snack dose is half the meal dose.

For all age groups, the total daily dose should not exceed 2,500 lipase units per kilogram of body weight per meal, 10,000 lipase units per kilogram of body weight per day, or 4,000 lipase units per gram of fat intake.

If you take more than you should, drink plenty of water and talk to your doctor or pharmacist.Very high doses of pancreas powder can cause an increase in uric acid in the blood and urine.

If you forget to take a dose, take your next dose as usual with the next meal.Do not try to make up for a missed dose.

Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor first.Many patients have to take the drug for life.

Intake

Always take this medicine during or immediately after a meal or snack.This allows the enzymes to mix thoroughly with the food and digest it as it passes through the intestines.The capsules should be swallowed whole with sufficient liquid.Do not crush or chew the capsules as this may cause irritation in the mouth or change how they work in the body.

Patient information

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking the medicine.Rare cases of an intestinal disorder called fibrosing colonopathy have been reported in patients with cystic fibrosis taking high-dose pancreas powder products.Tell your doctor if you have cystic fibrosis and take more than 10,000 lipase units per kilogram of body weight per day and have unusual abdominal discomfort or changes in abdominal symptoms.

If an allergic reaction occurs, stop treatment and talk to your doctor.An allergic reaction could include itching, hives, or rash.In rare cases, a serious allergic reaction may occur with a feeling of warmth, dizziness and fainting, and difficulty breathing.These are symptoms of a serious, potentially life-threatening condition called anaphylactic shock.If this occurs, call for medical help immediately.Before taking this medicine, talk to your doctor if you are allergic to pork proteins.

Mouth pain, irritation, bleeding and mouth ulceration may occur if the capsules are chewed and/or held in the mouth for too long.Rinsing your mouth and drinking a glass of water can help when the first signs of mouth irritation appear.The preparation can only be sprinkled on certain foods.

The medicine has no effect on the ability to drive or use machines.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.Your doctor will decide whether you can take the medicine during pregnancy.The medicine can be used during breastfeeding.
