Pascorbin® injection solution

Pascorbin® is an injection solution that contains ascorbic acid (vitamin C).Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that the body cannot store.Most animals can produce vitamin C themselves, but humans have lost this ability over the course of evolution.Pascorbin® is used to treat clinical vitamin C deficiencies that cannot be corrected through nutrition or oral substitution, as well as methemoglobinemia in children.

Active ingredients and ingredients

1 ml of the injection solution contains 150 mg ascorbic acid as the active ingredient.Other ingredients include sodium bicarbonate and water for injections.

Area of application

Pascorbin® is used to treat vitamin C deficiencies that cannot be corrected through diet or oral intake.The preparation is also used for methemoglobinemia in children.A severe vitamin C deficiency can occur in acute and chronic infections, chronic inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, intestinal absorption disorders or after operations.

Contraindications

The medicine must not be used for oxalate kidney stones and certain diseases in which too much iron is stored in the body, such as thalassemia, hemochromatosis or sideroblastic anemia.In these cases, a doctor should be consulted before use.

Dosage

The usual dose is 5 ml slowly injected intravenously daily, up to 50 ml of solution for injection added to the infusion.To prevent vitamin C deficiency during prolonged artificial feeding, adults receive 100 to 500 mg of ascorbic acid intravenously per day.Children receive 5 to 7 mg of ascorbic acid per kilogram of body weight per day intravenously.For methemoglobinemia in childhood, 500 to 1000 mg of ascorbic acid are injected intravenously once.A dose of 100 mg per kilogram of body weight per day should not be exceeded.

Intake

The solution for injection is slowly injected intravenously by a doctor or medical staff.Do not self-medicate.The therapy must be carried out by a specialist.

Patient information

Intravenous injection of high doses can cause acute kidney failure due to kidney stones.Patients with kidney failure are particularly at risk.Adequate fluid intake should be ensured.In patients with kidney stone formation, the daily dose of vitamin C should not exceed 100 to 200 mg.Patients with severe renal insufficiency should not receive more than 50 to 100 mg daily.High doses of vitamin C should be avoided in patients with erythrocytic glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.In patients with breathing difficulties, treatment should be started with lower dosages.Pascorbin® must not be mixed with medicines whose effect is reduced by chemical reduction.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, an amount of ascorbic acid should not be exceeded 100 to 500 mg daily.

Notes

No prescription is required for this product.After administration of gram doses, the ascorbic acid concentration in the urine can increase to such an extent that the measurement of various clinical-chemical parameters is disturbed and distorted.After parenteral administration of ascorbic acid, the detection reaction of glucose in the blood is disrupted.No special precautions are required when driving or using machines.
