Instructions for use of the isotonic saline solution

The isotonic saline solution serves as a plasma-isotonic fluid replacement for hypotonic and isotonic dehydration.It can also be used as a short-term intravascular volume replacement, as a carrier solution for electrolyte concentrates and compatible medications, and to moisten dressings.No prescription is required for this product.

Area of application

This medicine is a potassium-free 0.9% sodium chloride solution for infusion.It serves as a plasma isotonic fluid replacement when body fluid is lost through hypotonic dehydration, i.e. loss of water with increased loss of salt, or isotonic dehydration, i.e. loss of water and salt in equal proportions.It can also be used as a short-term intravascular volume replacement, as a carrier solution for electrolyte concentrates and medications compatible with the solution, and to moisten dressings.If you don't feel better or even feel worse, contact your doctor.

The solution contains 2.25 g of sodium chloride, 38.5 mmol of sodium ions, 38.5 mmol of chloride ions, sodium hydroxide as an excipient, concentrated hydrochloric acid as an excipient and water for injections as an excipient.

Contraindications

The medicine must not be used if you are hypersensitive to sodium chloride or any of the other ingredients of the medicine or if you suffer from overhydration (hyperhydration states).

Dosage

Always use this medicine exactly as described.The dosage usually depends on the fluid and electrolyte requirements, which are around 40 ml per kilogram of body weight per day or around 6 mmol sodium per kilogram of body weight per day.The maximum daily dose is determined by fluid and electrolyte requirements.For adults, a guideline value of 3 - 6 mmol sodium per kilogram of body weight per day applies.A fluid intake of 40 ml per kilogram of body weight per day or approx. 6 mmol sodium per kilogram of body weight per day should not be exceeded in adults.The maximum infusion rate depends on the clinical situation.For children, a guideline value of 3 - 5 mmol sodium per kilogram of body weight per day applies.

In the event of an overdose, symptoms such as overhydration, excessive sodium or chloride blood levels, increased osmotic pressure in the blood and a metabolic disorder with hyperacidity of the blood can occur.In such cases, fluid intake should be stopped and rapid-acting diuretics given.If urine production is severely restricted, a kidney replacement procedure may be necessary.

Intake

This medicine is given through the veins (intravenous use).It can also be used to prepare injection or infusion preparations by dissolving and diluting medicines immediately before use.Dosage, duration of use and routes of administration depend on the relevant information for the diluted or dissolved medication.

Patient information

Particular caution is required in the case of reduced potassium levels in the blood, increased sodium levels in the blood, increased chloride levels in the blood and in diseases that require restricted sodium intake, such as heart failure, tissue swelling, fluid accumulation in the lungs, high blood pressure, severe kidney dysfunction and pregnancy-related disease states with high blood pressure, cramps and fluid accumulation in the tissues.Depending on the volume administered and the patient's condition, electrolyte and fluid status checks may be necessary.The medicine is suitable for adults and children.It has no influence on the ability to drive or use machines.
