Area of application
Calcium Acetate-Nefro 700 mg film-coated tablets are a mineral preparation that is used to bind phosphate in food.This reduces the absorption of phosphate into the body.This preparation is used to treat and prevent elevated phosphate levels in patients with severe kidney disease who are receiving dialysis treatment.

Each film-coated tablet contains 700 mg calcium acetate, which corresponds to 177.4 mg elemental calcium.The other ingredients are povidone K 30, microcrystalline cellulose, crospovidone, magnesium stearate (Ph. Eur.), sucrose, hypromellose, macrogol 6000 and talc.
Contraindications
The medicine must not be taken if there is an increased calcium concentration in the blood (hypercalcemia) or if you are allergic to calcium acetate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
Dosage
Always take the medicine exactly as described or after consulting your doctor or pharmacist.The recommended dose for adults is initially 2 film-coated tablets three times a day, swallowed whole with a little liquid with meals.The dosage depends on the phosphate concentration in your blood and should be checked regularly.The usual dose is 2 film-coated tablets four times a day or 3 film-coated tablets three times a day, although the maximum dose of 9 tablets per day should not be exceeded.The treating doctor decides on the dosage and duration of use.The treatment is long-term therapy and requires regular medical supervision.
There are no data on use for children and adolescents under 18 years of age, therefore use cannot be recommended.
Intake
The film-coated tablets should be swallowed whole with a little liquid.Please only take the film-coated tablets with meals so that the preparation can work as effectively as possible.
Patient information
Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine.Your doctor may recommend nutritional counseling to control dietary phosphate and calcium intake.Regular monitoring of phosphate and calcium concentrations in the blood is required, at least once a month.
There is an increased risk of hypercalcemia when taking medicines containing vitamin D at the same time.Simultaneous use must be carried out under medical supervision.Check with your doctor about the signs of hypercalcemia.
You should seek medical advice before taking calcium-containing medicines for stomach acidity.If you are taking cardiac glycosides at the same time, regular EKG-examinations and additional checks of your calcium level should be carried out.
This preparation has no influence on the ability to drive or use machines.However, a greatly increased calcium concentration in the blood can lead to impaired consciousness such as drowsiness or weakness.Therefore, look out for signs of elevated calcium levels before driving or operating machines.
Pregnancy
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.There are no data on the use of the drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding.In such cases, you should only take the medicine on the express instructions of your doctor and under regular monitoring of serum calcium levels.

Other
Have your blood calcium and phosphate levels checked regularly.If family members have already had calcium-containing kidney stones, ask your doctor before taking it.Do not take large amounts of vitamin D.
