Ferro sanol duodenal is an iron preparation used to treat iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia.It is particularly suitable for adults and children aged 6 and over with a minimum weight of 20 kg.The preparation can also be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with a low-iron diet or after blood loss.No prescription is required for this product.

Active ingredient and composition

The active ingredient in Ferro sanol duodenal is iron(II) glycine sulfate complex.Each hard capsule contains 567.7 mg of this complex, which corresponds to 100 mg of ferrous ion.The capsules contain enteric-coated pellets, which additionally include the following excipients: methacrylic acid-ethyl acrylate copolymer, microcrystalline cellulose, ascorbic acid, talc, triethyl (2-acetoxypropane-1,2,3-tricarboxylate), hyprolose, hypromellose, polysorbate 80, sodium dodecyl sulfate.The capsule shell consists of gelatin, titanium dioxide, iron (III) oxide, iron oxide hydrate and iron(II,III) oxide.

Ferro sanol duodenal is used for iron deficiency, especially iron deficiency anemia.It is also suitable for people with increased iron needs, such as pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as for people on a low-iron diet or after acute and chronic blood loss.

Dosage and application

The usual dosage for adults and children aged 6 and over is one capsule daily.If there is a severe iron deficiency, adults and young people aged 15 and over or with a body weight of at least 50 kg can initially take two to three capsules daily.The capsules should be taken whole with sufficient water, either in the morning on an empty stomach or about two hours apart from meals.The contents of the capsules can also be taken directly by carefully opening the capsule shell.

Side effects

Common side effects may include gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, constipation, heartburn, nausea, and vomiting.Rarely, reversible discoloration of the teeth or hypersensitivity reactions can occur.In rare cases, abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding and reversible discoloration of the tongue or oral mucosa may also occur.A dark discoloration of the stool is harmless and is due to the iron content.

Contraindications and precautions

Ferro sanol duodenal must not be taken if you are hypersensitive to iron or any of the other ingredients, if you have esophageal narrowing, hemochromatosis, iron overload, iron utilization disorders or in children under 6 years of age.Caution is advised in the case of existing diseases of the digestive tract, chronic kidney disease, liver dysfunction and alcoholism.In children, care should be taken to ensure correct dosage to avoid poisoning.

Interactions

Iron can inhibit the absorption of many medicines.Therefore, a sufficient time interval of at least two hours should be maintained between taking Ferro sanol duodenal and other medicines.Particular attention should be paid to interactions with painkillers and rheumatism medications, bisphosphonates, cholestyramine, penicillamine, oral gold compounds, L-methyldopa, levodopa, L-thyroxine, proton pump inhibitors, fluoroquinolones and tetracyclines.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

There is an increased need for iron during pregnancy and breastfeeding.Therefore, Ferro sanol duodenal should be taken regularly in the dosage specified by the doctor.

Storage

The medicine should be kept out of the reach of children and not stored above 25°C.It must not be used after the expiry date stated on the package.
