The isotonic saline solution 0.9% is an infusion solution that contains sodium chloride as an active ingredient.It is used to compensate for fluid and salt losses, to briefly replenish the vascular system, as a carrier solution for other medications, and for wound treatment and moistening dressings.

The isotonic saline solution 0.9% is a clear, colorless infusion solution that contains sodium chloride in a concentration corresponding to the salt concentration in the blood.It is administered intravenously or used for irrigation and moistening.

What is the saline solution used for?

The solution is used for dehydration, sodium and fluid deficiency, increased pH and reduced chloride levels as well as chloride losses.It is also used for short-term filling of the vascular system, as a carrier solution for other medications and for wound treatment.

What should you consider before use?

The solution must not be used if there is overwatering.Caution is advised with low potassium levels, elevated sodium and chloride levels, as well as with certain diseases such as heart failure, edema, pulmonary edema, high blood pressure, eclampsia and renal insufficiency.In the case of hypertonic dehydration, the infusion must be carried out slowly to avoid an increase in salt levels.During the infusion, water balance, acid-base balance and serum electrolyte levels are monitored.

How is the saline solution used?

The dosage depends on fluid and electrolyte needs.The maximum dose is 40 ml per kg of body weight per day.The solution is usually administered at up to 5 ml per kg of body weight per hour.In exceptional cases the speed can be increased.Overdose may result in elevated sodium and chloride levels, overhydration, and acidosis.In such a case, the infusion is stopped and a diuretic is given if necessary.

What side effects are possible?

Possible side effects include increased sodium and chloride levels in the blood.If side effects occur, a doctor or pharmacist should be consulted.

How should the saline solution be stored?

The solution should be kept out of the reach of children.No special storage conditions are required.The expiry date should be noted.After first opening, the solution should be used immediately or stored at 2 to 8°C within 24 hours.Any unused infusion solution should be discarded.
