Area of application

Acimol® with L-methionine is suitable for people who suffer from acute bladder infections, chronic urinary tract infections or a tendency to urinary stones, especially phosphate stones.The active ingredient L-methionine promotes the natural acidification of the urine, which inhibits the proliferation of bacteria, especially E. coli.This helps treat urinary tract infections and can help prevent urinary stones and optimize the effects of certain antibiotics.The film-coated tablets are well tolerated and offer natural support for these complaints.

The included pH test strips enable the urine pH value to be checked regularly.A pH value below 6 is useful to prevent bladder infections.Monitoring the pH value can ensure the effectiveness of Acimol®.

Ingredients of Acimol® with pH test strips film-coated tablets are: 500 mg methionine, microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium salt, Eudragit NE 30 D, hypromellose, macrogol 6000, magnesium stearate (vegetable), pre-gelatinized corn starch, highly dispersed silicon dioxide, talc and titanium dioxide.

Contraindications

The medicine must not be taken in cases of hypersensitivity to the active ingredient or one of the excipients, congenital homocysteinuria, uric acid and cystine stone disorders, renal insufficiency, oxalosis, methionine adenosyltransferase deficiency, metabolic and renal tubular acidosis and in infants.

Dosage

The usual dose is 1 to 2 tablets 3 times a day, corresponding to 0.5 to 1 g of methionine 3 times a day.The therapeutic aim is to have a pH value of the urine below 6. The effect of Acimol® can only occur after 5 to 6 days.The duration of application depends on the therapeutic need.

Intake

The film-coated tablets are intended to be taken orally and should be taken with sufficient liquid, such as a glass of water.

Patient information

Particular caution is required in patients with hepatic insufficiency or hepatogenic encephalopathy, as the synthesis of neurotoxic mercaptans may be promoted in bacterial metabolism.If there is a deficiency of folic acid, vitamin B2, B6 and/or B12, treatment with methionine can lead to an increase in homocysteine blood levels.For long-term use, ensure a diet rich in folic acid and vitamin B.Thyroid function should be checked before treatment with methionine, as homocysteine blood levels may be increased in hypothyroidism.Treatment with methionine can lead to increased calcium excretion in the urine, which is why the mineral balance should be checked regularly during long-term use.In patients at risk of acidosis, long-term treatment with methionine should be carried out with regular monitoring of the acid-base balance in the blood.There are no sufficient studies available for use in children under 12 years of age.

There are no known effects on the ability to drive or use machines.

Pregnancy

There are insufficient data to support the use of methionine during pregnancy and breastfeeding.Pregnant and breastfeeding women should only take the medicine after the doctor has carefully weighed the benefits and risks.

Notes

If there is a deficiency of folic acid, vitamin B2, B6 and/or B12, treatment with L-methionine can lead to an increase in homocysteine levels.An increased occurrence of homocysteine in the blood can be viewed as an independent risk factor for the wall changes in the blood vessels that lead to “calcification”.When using Acimol® for a long time, it is important to ensure that you get enough folic acid and B vitamins in your diet.If necessary, supplementary intake should be taken.Please do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the pack or outer packaging.The expiry date refers to the last day of the specified month.
