Caya Diaphragm Gel is a contraceptive gel used in conjunction with the diaphragm and cervical cap barrier methods. Use without a contraceptive gel is less safe. Caya Gel is made of lactic acid and has been found in comparative studies to be as safe as products containing nonoxynol-9, but with fewer side effects. The gel forms a physical barrier in front of the cervix and lowers the pH of the vaginal fluid, which inhibits sperm motility. About a teaspoon (about 4ml) of gel is applied before inserting the diaphragm or portio cap. The gel can also be applied additionally before further sexual intercourse with the vaginal applicator. Note that Caya Gel does not provide protection against sexually transmitted diseases. The ingredients of the gel are water, lactic acid, sodium lactate, cellulose and sorbic acid. Caya Gel is water-soluble and compatible with condoms made of natural rubber or polyurethane. It can be purchased online. The manufacturer of the gel is KESSEL medintim GmbH.
