Areas of application

Sodium chloride brown 20% is a concentrate for preparing an infusion solution that is used to supply sodium chloride.It is used for low sodium levels in the blood (hyponatremia), low chloride levels in the blood (hypochloremia) and for excess fluid with low salt concentrations in the plasma (hypotonic hyperhydration).

Active ingredient and composition

The active ingredient in sodium chloride brown 20% is sodium chloride.One milliliter of the concentrate contains 200 milligrams of sodium chloride.A 10 milliliter ampoule contains 2.0 grams of sodium chloride, and a 20 milliliter ampoule contains 4.0 grams of sodium chloride.The other ingredient is water for injections.

Application and dosage

Sodium Chloride Braun 20% is administered as an intravenous infusion after being diluted in an appropriate carrier solution.The dosage will be determined by your doctor and based on your serum sodium level and your body weight.The maximum daily dose is 3-6 millimoles of sodium per kilogram of body weight for adults and 3-5 millimoles of sodium per kilogram of body weight for children.

Special instructions and precautions

Sodium Chloride Braun 20% must not be used if there is an increased sodium level in the blood (hypernatremia) or an increased chloride level in the blood (hyperchloremia).Particular caution is required in the case of low potassium levels in the blood, heart failure, fluid accumulation in the tissues, high blood pressure, severe kidney dysfunction and during treatment with corticosteroids or ACTH.Checks of blood electrolyte levels and water balance as well as acid-base status are necessary.

Side effects

Like all medicines, sodium chloride Braun 20% can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.Possible side effects include increased blood sodium and chloride levels, acute volume overload, diarrhea, increased urine output, and irritation of the venous wall.The frequency of side effects depends on the dosage and the rate of infusion.

Storage

Keep medicines out of the reach of children.The medicine must not be used after the expiry date stated on the container and the outer carton.The containers are intended for single use.Only use if the ampoule is intact and the solution is clear.
