Unizink 50 is a medicine in the form of enteric-coated tablets used to treat zinc deficiencies that cannot be corrected by diet. The tablets contain the active ingredient zinc aspartate. Before taking Unizink 50, certain instructions should be followed. It must not be taken if there is an allergy to zinc aspartate or other components of the medicine, or if there is severe kidney damage or acute kidney failure. It is important to take the medicine exactly as described in the leaflet or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. The recommended daily dose varies according to age: children between 1 and 10 years of age take 1 tablet daily, children 11 years and older and adults take 1-2 tablets daily. The tablets should be taken unchewed and unsucked with liquid, preferably 30-60 minutes before meals. The duration of use may be several months. When taking Unizink 50, possible interactions with other medicines and food should be considered. Zinc may reduce the absorption of tetracyclines (antibiotics) and impair the absorption of ofloxacin and other quinolones. Chelating agents may decrease the absorption or increase the excretion of zinc, while iron, copper or calcium salts may decrease the absorption of zinc. Side effects may occur, although not everybody gets them. In rare cases, Unizink 50 may cause a copper deficiency. In case of side effects, a doctor or pharmacist should be consulted. The medicine should be kept out of the reach of children and stored away from heat. The pack sizes of Unizink 50 are 20, 50 and 100 enteric-coated tablets. Important information is that the medicine should not be used if you are allergic to zinc, citric acid, carboxymethylcellulose, talc or polyethylene glycol. Possible interactions with other medicines should always be discussed with a doctor or pharmacist.
