Information about Gelafusal

Gelafusal is a volume replacement infusion solution containing 4% modified gelatin in Ringer's acetate.This product is available without a prescription.It is used for the prophylaxis and treatment of volume deficiency and shock as well as for preoperative hemodilution (blood thinning).

Areas of application

Gelafusal is used to treat volume depletion and shock and to thin the blood before surgery.The infusion solution contains gelatin polysuccinate, sodium acetate trihydrate, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride dihydrate, magnesium chloride hexahydrate, sodium hydroxide and water for injections.The electrolytes in the solution are sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride and acetate.

Application and dosage

Gelafusal is given as an infusion into the vein by a healthcare professional.The dosage depends on individual needs.For smaller volume losses and to stabilize circulation before and during operations, the amount administered is usually 500 ml to 1000 ml. For larger volume losses and the onset of shock, 1000 ml to 1500 ml can be administered.In emergencies with circulatory collapse, a pressure infusion of up to 500 ml is initially carried out.

Side effects

Like all medicines, Gelafusal can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.Possible side effects include hypersensitivity reactions such as skin reactions, increase in temperature, chills, increase and decrease in blood pressure.Rarely, bradycardia, tachycardia, flushing, cardiac arrest, bronchospasm, dyspnea and nausea may occur.If symptoms of intolerance occur, the infusion must be stopped immediately.

Storage and preservation

Gelafusal should be kept out of the reach of children.The medicine must not be used after the expiry date stated on the container.After opening, the solution should be used immediately.Gelafusal should only be administered if the solution is clear and the container is not damaged.
