Calcium gluconate 10% MPC solution for injection is a medicine for supplying calcium in cases of severely low calcium levels in the blood (hypocalcemia).It is used for acute signs such as sensory disturbances in the skin, spasmodic muscle rigidity, cramps in the hands and feet, colic, muscle weakness, confusion, epilepsy-like seizures and cardiac symptoms such as irregular heartbeat or acute heart failure.

Areas of application

Calcium gluconate 10% MPC solution for injection is used to treat hypocalcemia.The solution contains the active ingredient calcium gluconate, which helps to normalize calcium levels in the blood.The active ingredient content is 94 mg calcium gluconate per ml, corresponding to 0.21 mmol calcium.The product also contains calcium D-saccharate tetrahydrate and water for injections.

Application and dosage

The use of calcium gluconate 10% MPC injection solution should always be carried out after consultation with a doctor.The dose is adjusted individually to bring blood calcium levels to normal levels.Adults usually receive an initial dose of 10 ml, which can be repeated if necessary.In children, the dose depends on body weight and blood calcium levels.

The solution for injection is administered slowly into a vein or deep into a large muscle.In children, the solution should only be given intravenously.The application should be carried out in a lying position and with monitoring of cardiac function.

Side effects

Like all medicines, calcium gluconate 10% MPC solution for injection can have side effects.Possible side effects include slow or irregular heartbeat, drop in blood pressure, circulatory collapse, dilatation of blood vessels, hot flashes, nausea, vomiting, feeling hot, sweating, and pain or redness with intramuscular injections.

If accidentally injected next to a blood vessel or too superficially intramuscularly injected, tissue irritation, skin peeling or tissue necrosis may occur.

Warnings and precautions

Calcium gluconate 10% MPC injection solution must not be used if you are allergic to calcium gluconate or one of the other ingredients, increased calcium levels in the blood, excessive calcium excretion in the urine, poisoning with digitalis preparations or during treatment with digitalis preparations, unless the calcium level is extremely low.

Particular caution is required in cases of renal calcification, heart disease, sarcoidosis, renal insufficiency, simultaneous use with certain drugs such as digitalis preparations, adrenaline, magnesium, calcium antagonists, thiazide diuretics and ceftriaxone.Pregnant and breastfeeding women should only use the medicine after consulting a doctor.

Storage

The medicine should be kept out of the reach of children and should not be used after the expiry date stated on the ampoule and carton.After opening the ampoule, the solution should be used immediately.After dilution, the ready-to-use solution should not be stored for longer than 24 hours at 2-8 °C.The medicine must not be used if there are any changes such as damage to the ampoule, discoloration or cloudiness of the solution or visible particles.
