Agnucaston® is a herbal medicine made from the dry extract of the fruit of the monk's pepper (Vitex agnus-castus).The ingredients of this drug have a hormone-regulating effect and help normalize the menstrual cycle.Agnucaston® is used for various menstrual problems, including feelings of tension and swelling in the breasts and menstrual irregularities.

Area of application

Agnucaston® is used to relieve menstrual cramps.These include irregular periods, feelings of tension and swelling in the breasts (mastodynia) and symptoms that occur before menstruation (premenstrual syndrome, PMS).

Mode of action

The monk's pepper extracts contained in Agnucaston® suppress the release of prolactin, a hormone that can be responsible for premenstrual symptoms.Additionally, chasteberry helps to achieve the balance between estrogen and progesterone.

One film-coated tablet contains 4 mg dry extract from monk's pepper fruits (7-11:1), with ethanol 70% (V/V) serving as the extractant.The excipients include microcrystalline cellulose, iron (III) oxide, Eudragit RL, indigo carmine aluminum salt, potato starch, lactose monohydrate, macrogol 6000, magnesium stearate (vegetable), povidone K30, colloidal silicon dioxide, talc, titanium dioxide and traces of carbohydrates.

Contraindications

Agnucaston® should not be used in cases of known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients, in breast tumors, tumors of the pituitary gland and in children under 12 years of age.During pregnancy and breastfeeding, a doctor should be consulted before taking.

Dosage

Adults and children aged 12 and over take one film-coated tablet once a day with sufficient liquid.It should be taken at the same time every day and carried out over at least three monthly cycles.The tablets are small and easy to swallow.

Intake

The film-coated tablets should be swallowed whole with sufficient liquid, such as a glass of water.

Patient information

It is recommended to speak to a doctor or pharmacist before taking Agnucaston®.Patients with estrogen-sensitive tumors should only take the medicine after consulting their doctor.The same applies to simultaneous intake with dopamine agonists, dopamine antagonists, estrogens or anti-estrogens.If symptoms worsen, a doctor should be consulted.Patients with a history of pituitary disease should consult a doctor before taking it.In the case of prolactin-secreting pituitary tumors, Agnucaston® can mask the symptoms.There is insufficient experience with children and adolescents under 18 years of age, so the medicine should not be used at this age.

No studies have been conducted on the effects on the ability to drive and use machines.

Pregnancy

Agnucaston® should not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding as there is insufficient experience and a risk to the newborn cannot be ruled out.There are no specific studies on the influence of fertility.
