Agnucaston is a herbal medicinal product for the treatment of menstrual disorders. It is used for menstrual irregularities, complaints occurring before the monthly period and feelings of tension and swelling in the breasts. A doctor should first be consulted for diagnostic clarification. The usual dose is 1 film-coated tablet taken once a day, unchewed, with sufficient liquid. Use over several months without interruption is recommended. Discontinuation of the medicine is usually harmless. It may cause skin rash, itching and hives as side effects. It contains monk's pepper fruit dry extract as the active substance and other excipients. The medicine is contraindicated in hypersensitivity to the ingredients, breast tumours and tumours of the pituitary gland. It should not be used during pregnancy and lactation. The medicine should be kept out of the reach of children and should not be used after the expiry date. There is no exact dosage recommendation in case of impaired kidney or liver function. Overdose may occur, so a doctor should be notified if large amounts are taken. If a dose is forgotten, do not take a double dose. It contains lactose and is gluten-free. The medicine works by suppressing the release of prolactin and restoring the balance between oestrogen and progesterone.
