Agnucaston® film-coated tablets

Agnucaston® is a herbal medicine made from the dry extract of the fruit of the monk's pepper (Vitex agnus-castus).The ingredients of this product have a hormone-regulating effect and promote a regular cycle.It is used for monthly recurring menstrual problems, such as feelings of tension and swelling in the breasts and menstrual irregularities.

Area of application

Agnucaston® is used to relieve various menstrual problems.These include irregular periods, feelings of tenderness and swelling in the breasts (mastodynia) and symptoms before menstruation, known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

Mode of action

The monk's pepper extracts contained in Agnucaston® suppress the release of prolactin, which is a cause of premenstrual symptoms.Additionally, chasteberry helps to achieve the balance between estrogen and progesterone.

Agnucaston® contains 4 mg chasteberry fruit dry extract, (7-11:1), with ethanol 70% (V/V) serving as the extractant.Other excipients are cellulose, microcrystalline, iron (III) oxide, Eudragit RL, indigo carmine, aluminum salt, potato starch, 25 mg lactose 1-water, macrogol 6000, magnesium stearate (Ph. Eur.) [pflanzlich], povidone K30, silicon dioxide, highly disperse, talc, titanium dioxide and 0.01 BE total carbohydrates.

Contraindications

Agnucaston® should not be used in cases of known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients, in breast tumors, tumors of the pituitary gland and in children under 12 years of age.During pregnancy and breastfeeding, a doctor should be consulted before taking.

Dosage

Adults and children aged 12 and over take one Agnucaston® tablet once a day with a little liquid.It should be taken at the same time every day and last for at least three monthly cycles.The tablets are small and therefore easy to swallow.

Patient information

Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking the product.Patients who have or have had an estrogen-sensitive malignant tumor should only take the medicine after consulting their doctor.The same applies to simultaneous intake with dopamine agonists, dopamine antagonists, estrogens or anti-estrogens.If symptoms worsen during treatment, you should consult a doctor or ask a pharmacist.Patients with a history of pituitary disease should consult a doctor before taking it.In prolactin-secreting tumors of the pituitary gland, the drug can mask the symptoms of the tumor.There is no adequately documented experience with its use in children and adolescents under 18 years of age, so it should not be used at this age.

No studies have been conducted on the effects on the ability to drive and use machines.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Pregnancy: There is currently no experience with the use of the drug in pregnant women, therefore it must not be used during pregnancy.

Breast-feeding: It is not known whether components of the active ingredient or their metabolites are excreted in breast milk.A risk to the newborn cannot be ruled out.The safety of breastfeeding has not been adequately studied.An influence on milk production was observed in animal models.The preparation should not be used during breastfeeding.

Reproductive ability: There are no specific studies on the influence of reproductive ability.
