What is Imodium® acute?

Area of application

Mode of action

The active ingredient loperamide in Imodium® acute inhibits the increased intestinal movement that occurs in acute diarrhea.This causes food to move more slowly through the intestines, giving the body more time to absorb fluids and electrolytes.This leads to normalization of stools and relieves the symptoms of acute diarrhea.

One Imodium® acute hard capsule contains 2 mg of loperamide hydrochloride as the active ingredient.The other ingredients are lactose monohydrate, corn starch, talc, magnesium stearate (Ph. Eur.), gelatin and colorants of the capsule shell (titanium dioxide, indigo carmine, iron (III) hydroxide oxide, iron(II,III) oxide, erythrosine).

Contraindications

Imodium® acute should not be used in cases of known hypersensitivity to one of the ingredients, in children under 12 years of age, in conditions in which a slowing of intestinal activity must be avoided (e.g. constipation and intestinal obstruction), in cases of diarrhea with blood in the stool and fever, in cases of diarrhea that occurs during or after taking antibiotics, in chronic diarrheal diseases, in inflammation of the colon, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Dosage

The recommended dose for adolescents aged 12 years and over is one hard capsule as an initial dose and one hard capsule as a repeat dose after each unformed stool, with a maximum daily dose of 4 hard capsules.For adults, the initial dose is 2 hard capsules and the repeat dose is 1 hard capsule after each unformed stool, with a maximum daily dose of 6 hard capsules.The hard capsules should be swallowed whole with a glass of water.

Intake

The hard capsules of Imodium® acute should be taken whole with a little liquid, such as a glass of water.

Patient information

Imodium® acute should only be used as prescribed by a doctor if you have or have had liver disease.When diarrhea occurs, it is important to pay attention to fluid and electrolyte replacement, especially in children.The recommended dosage and duration of use of two days should not be exceeded to avoid severe constipation.If diarrhea persists after two days of treatment, the medicine must be stopped and a doctor consulted.

Pregnancy
