Description of the drug

This medicine contains a mixture of enzymes known as pancreas powder, also called pancreatin.It is obtained from pig pancreas and supports digestion.The preparation consists of small enteric-coated microfilm tablets that slowly release the pancreas powder in the intestine.

Area of application

The medicine is used to treat exocrine pancreatic insufficiency.The pancreas does not produce enough enzymes to digest food.It can be used on children, adolescents and adults.The dosage instructions for different age groups can be found in the “Dosage” category".

Pancreatin treatment improves symptoms of pancreatic exocrine insufficiency, including stool consistency, abdominal pain, flatulence, and stool frequency.If you don't feel better after five days or even feel worse, contact your doctor.

Mode of action

The enzymes in the supplement digest food as it passes through the intestines.You should take the medicine during or immediately after a meal or snack to allow the enzymes to mix thoroughly with the food.

Contraindications

This medicine must not be taken if you are allergic to pancreatin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

Dosage

Always take this medicine exactly as described or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

Your dosage is given in lipase units.Lipase is one of the enzymes in pancreas powder.Different strengths of the drug contain different amounts of lipase.Always follow your doctor's instructions about how much Pancreatan to take.Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose for you based on the severity of your condition, your weight, your diet and the amount of fat in your stool.

If you continue to have fatty stools or other stomach or intestinal problems, talk to your doctor as your dosage may need to be adjusted.

Children: The strength of this drug may not be appropriate for initiating therapy in children depending on the child's age and weight.The required dose for a child should be determined by the doctor using dosage forms containing fewer lipase units.Once the dose per meal has been established, this strength of the drug can be used in children.The usual starting dose for children under 4 years of age is 1,000 lipase units per kilogram of body weight per meal.The usual starting dose for children aged 4 and over is 500 lipase units per kilogram of body weight per meal.

Adolescents and Adults: Weight-based enzyme dosing in adolescents and adults should begin with 500 lipase units per kilogram of body weight per meal.The usual dose for a meal is between 25,000 and 80,000 lipase units.The usual dose for a snack is half the dose for a meal.

For all ages: Your total daily dosage should not exceed 2,500 lipase units per kilogram of body weight per meal, 10,000 lipase units per kilogram of body weight per day, or 4,000 lipase units per gram of fat intake.

If you take more than you should, drink plenty of water and talk to your doctor or pharmacist.Very high doses of pancreas powder can cause an increase in uric acid in the blood and urine.

If you forget to take a dose, take your next dose as usual with the next meal.Do not try to make up for a missed dose.

Do not stop taking it without first speaking to your doctor.Many patients have to take the drug for life.

Intake

Always take this medicine during or immediately after a meal or snack.This allows the enzymes to mix thoroughly with the food and digest it as it passes through the intestines.

The capsules should be swallowed whole with sufficient liquid.Do not crush or chew the capsules as this may cause irritation in your mouth or change how they work in your body.

If you find it difficult to swallow the capsules, open them carefully and swallow the microfilm-coated tablets whole with enough liquid.Do not mix, crush or chew the microfilm tablets in non-acidic food or liquid as this may cause mouth irritation or change the way they work in your body.

Do not keep the capsules or their contents in your mouth.Make sure the medicine is swallowed completely and no microfilm tablets are left in your mouth.

Patient information

Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking the medicine.Patients with cystic fibrosis should monitor for unusual abdominal discomfort or changes in abdominal symptoms when taking high-dose pancreas powder products.Tell your doctor if you have cystic fibrosis and are taking more than 10,000 lipase units per kilogram of body weight per day.

If an allergic reaction occurs, stop your treatment and talk to your doctor.An allergic reaction could include itching, hives, or rash.In rare cases, a serious allergic reaction may occur with a feeling of warmth, dizziness and fainting, and difficulty breathing.If this occurs, call for medical help immediately.If you are allergic to pork proteins, talk to your doctor before taking the supplement.

Mouth pain, irritation, bleeding and mouth ulceration may occur if the capsules are chewed and/or held in the mouth for too long.Rinsing your mouth and drinking a glass of water can help when the first signs of mouth irritation appear.

The medicine has no effect on the ability to drive or use machines.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.Your doctor will decide whether you can take the medicine during pregnancy.The preparation can be used during breastfeeding.

Other

Care must be taken to swallow the preparation whole, as it contains active enzymes that, when released into the oral cavity, e.g.B. by chewing, which can lead to damage to the mucous membrane.The absorption of folic acid can be reduced by taking finished medicines containing pancreas powder, so additional folic acid intake may be necessary.The effect of the blood sugar-lowering active ingredients acarbose and miglitol can be reduced by taking the preparation at the same time.In individual cases, immediate-type allergic reactions and allergic reactions of the digestive tract have been described after taking pancreas powder.If this allergic reaction occurs, the preparation must be stopped immediately and a doctor must be consulted as soon as possible.In patients with cystic fibrosis, the formation of narrowings in the lower sections of the intestine has been described in individual cases after administration of high doses of pancreas powder.If symptoms are similar to intestinal obstruction, the possibility of intestinal strictures should also be taken into account.In patients with cystic fibrosis, increased uric acid excretion in the urine may occur, especially when taking high doses of pancreatin.Therefore, uric acid excretion in the urine should be controlled in these patients to avoid the formation of uric acid stones.The preparation must not be taken in acute pancreatitis or an acute attack of chronic pancreatitis during the florid phase of the disease.
