Ozym® 20,000 is a medicine that contains enzymes from the pancreas of pigs, also called pancreas powder or pancreatin.It is used to treat digestive disorders caused by reduced or absent pancreatic function.No prescription is required for this product.

The active ingredient in Ozym® 20,000 is porcine pancreas powder.One enteric-coated hard capsule contains 195.2 mg pancreas powder, corresponding to a lipase activity of 20,000 Ph. Eur. units, an amylase activity of at least 15,000 Ph. Eur. units and a protease activity of at least 900 Ph. Eur. units.

The other ingredients are microcrystalline cellulose, crospovidone, highly disperse silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, methacrylic acid-ethyl acrylate copolymer (1:1) dispersion 30%, triethyl citrate, talc, simeticon emulsion (contains simeticon, methylcellulose, sorbic acid and water), montan glycol wax, gelatin and sodium dodecyl sulfate.

Contraindications

Ozym® 20,000 must not be taken if you are allergic to pancreas powder, pork or any of the other ingredients.The product should also not be used in the case of acute inflammation of the pancreas or acute attacks of chronic inflammation during the fully developed phase of the disease.However, in the decline phase during the dietary build-up, it may occasionally make sense to take it.

Dosage

The recommended dose is 1 to 2 capsules per meal, equivalent to 20,000 to 40,000 Ph. Eur. units of lipase.The required dose depends on the severity of the indigestion and may be higher.The dose should only be increased under medical supervision.The dose also depends on the fat content of the meal.A daily dose of 15,000 to 20,000 Ph. Eur. units of lipase per kilogram of body weight should not be exceeded.

Take the preparation whole with plenty of liquid, preferably in the middle of the meal.Do not take the preparation while lying down.Make sure to swallow the medicine whole, as its effectiveness can be reduced if you chew it and the enzymes it contains can damage the mucous membrane.If you cannot swallow the hard capsule, you can open it and swallow the microtablets inside without the capsule shell.Be careful not to chew the microtablets.Always drink plenty of fluids.

Patient information

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking the product.In cases of cystic fibrosis and high doses, intestinal narrowing can occur in individual cases, which can lead to intestinal obstruction.Symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, belching, flatulence and colicky pain should be taken seriously and checked by a doctor.Unusual gastrointestinal complaints should also be examined by a doctor.The preparation contains active enzymes that, when released into the oral cavity, can cause damage to the mucous membrane.Make sure to take the product without chewing.Children under 15 years of age with cystic fibrosis should not be treated with this preparation.The preparation has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.There is insufficient experience with the use of the drug in pregnant women.There are insufficient data from animal studies.The possible risk to humans is unknown.If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, you should not take this medicine unless your doctor considers it absolutely necessary.
