Directions for use of the article MANNITOL INFUSIONSLOE 10: The MANNITOL-INFUSIONSLÖSUNG 10 contains the active substance mannitol in a concentration of 100 g in 1 l solution. It is used for the therapy and prophylaxis of acute renal failure after trauma or shock, to lower intracranial pressure when the blood-brain barrier is intact, for cerebral oedema prophylaxis and therapy, and for the treatment of glaucoma. Contraindications are oliguria/anuria after a trial infusion, cardiac decompensation, dehydration states, hyperhydration, pulmonary oedema, intracranial haemorrhage, urinary tract outflow obstruction and increased serum osmolarity. In late pregnancy, there is a risk of overdose due to renal overload after infusion of large amounts of mannitol solution. Side effects may include nausea, vomiting, upper abdominal pain, headache, confusional states, convulsions and tachycardia. Thrombophlebitis may occur at the injection site. The effect of osmodiuretics such as mannitol only occurs when they are administered at a specific infusion rate. Before starting osmotherapy with mannitol, renal failure due to fluid or volume deficiency must be ruled out.
