Application and active ingredients

The MANNITOL-INFUSIONSLÖSUNG 10 is used for the treatment and prophylaxis of acute renal failure caused by trauma or shock, provided a trial infusion has been successful.It is also used to reduce intracranial pressure when the blood-brain barrier is intact, osmotherapy to prevent and treat cerebral edema and to treat glaucoma.

One liter of the infusion solution contains 100 grams of the active ingredient mannitol.The other ingredient included is water for injection purposes.

Contraindications

The MANNITOL-INFUSIONSLÖSUNG 10 must not be used in the case of oliguria or anuria after a trial infusion, cardiac decompensation, dehydration states, hyperhydration, pulmonary edema, intracranial bleeding, drainage obstructions in the area of the urinary tract and increased serum osmolarity.During pregnancy there is a risk of overdose after infusion of large amounts of mannitol solution due to overload of the kidneys in late pregnancy.

Side effects

After rapid infusion, nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, headache, confusion, cramps and tachycardia may occur.Thrombophlebitis can develop at the injection site.Osmodiuretics such as mannitol only take effect at an appropriate infusion rate of around 125 ml in 20 to 40 minutes.This is associated with an acute volume load on the organism, which is all the more serious the lower the urine production.

Before starting osmotherapy with mannitol, kidney failure due to fluid or volume deficiency should be ruled out.Possible disorders include dehydration, severe electrolyte losses, the development of pulmonary edema with impaired kidney function, acute kidney failure and hypersensitivity reactions up to anaphylactic shock.
