Mistletoe therapy is part of integrative oncology, which combines conventional medicine and complementary medicine.It can be carried out at any time during the cancer process, both before, during and after standard therapy.Over 150 clinical studies confirm the good tolerability of mistletoe therapy and its positive effect on the quality of life of cancer patients.

Application of mistletoe therapy

Mistletoe therapy is tailored to your individual needs and requires medical supervision.Your doctor will check whether the therapy is an option for you, select the right type of mistletoe and explain how to use it.You can then carry out the therapy independently at home.

The first time you use it, inject the mistletoe extract under your skin (subcutaneously), ideally into a fold of skin on your stomach or thigh.The injection is usually given three times a week.Long-term use over several months is recommended so that mistletoe therapy has lasting effects.After the adjustment period, there are breaks of several weeks between injection times during which no injection is given.

The body's reactions to mistletoe therapy

The body often shows the following reactions to mistletoe therapy: reddened injection site (sometimes with swelling or itching) and a slight increase in body temperature (0.5 to 1 degree Celsius).These signs from the body (local reactions) are harmless and even desirable because they indicate the activity of the immune system.If you have a fever over 38 degrees Celsius or severe redness at the injection site that is more than 5 centimeters in diameter, you should not inject the next dose of mistletoe.If you have allergic reactions such as hives, facial swelling or shortness of breath, contact your doctor.

If patients are terminally ill with cancer (palliative situation), statutory health insurance companies cover the costs of mistletoe therapy.In addition, reimbursement of costs is possible if the therapy is used to mitigate severe side effects of chemotherapy.As a prerequisite for this, patients need a doctor's prescription with a health insurance prescription.
