Effect of zinc
Zinc is a vital trace element that is needed in the body for a variety of functions. It is a component of enzymes and other proteins such as hormones and transport proteins.Zinc is essential for the reading of genetic information, the formation of new body cells and has antioxidant properties. It plays an important role in the immune system, skin, hair and mucous membrane health, wound healing, fertility and sensory functions.Zinc is also required for the storage and release of insulin from the pancreas and thus for carbohydrate metabolism.
Symptoms of zinc deficiency
Due to the numerous functions of zinc, a deficiency can manifest itself in a wide variety of symptoms.Typical signs of zinc deficiency are:
Weakened immune system, increased susceptibility to infections, inflammation in the mouth area, cracks in the corners of the mouth, smell and taste disorders, wounds that heal poorly, dry, flaky skin, inflammatory redness of the skin, nail changes such as brittle nails or transverse furrows, dull hair, hair loss and premature graying, depression, mood swings and anxiety, underdevelopment of the sexual organs, reduced fertility and erectile dysfunction, difficulty concentrating, disturbed learning behaviorin children, growth disorders in children as well as reduced response to the body's own insulin and disorders of glucose metabolism.
Causes of zinc deficiency
The zinc balance depends on four factors: intake, requirement, loss and rate of absorption from the intestine.A deficiency occurs when not enough zinc is supplied, there is an increased need, the body excretes too much zinc due to illness or stress, or the absorption of the mineral into the body is disturbed.
Unbalanced diets such as fast food, lemonade and cola drinks or slimming diets can lead to too little zinc being absorbed through food.A vegetarian or vegan diet can also contribute to a zinc deficiency, as zinc is mainly contained in animal foods and is better absorbed from them than from plant-based foods.
In some situations the body needs more zinc than usual, e.g.B. during pregnancy and breastfeeding, when healing wounds, infections or intensive sporting activity.
Zinc losses can occur through the skin, e.g.B. with heavy sweating, skin injuries or skin diseases.Increased urinary losses are observed in diabetics, kidney and liver diseases.Certain medicines can cause zinc depletion in the body, e.g.B. Antihypertensives, diuretics, cortisone preparations or oral contraceptives.
A zinc deficiency can also arise from a reduced absorption of zinc from the intestine into the blood, e.g.B. with intestinal diseases, high alcohol consumption or regular use of laxatives.Plant-based foods contain phytates, which bind zinc and thereby prevent its absorption.
