Area of application

This medicine is a potassium-free sodium chloride solution with a concentration of 0.9% and is used as a plasma isotonic fluid replacement.It is used for loss of body fluid due to hypotonic dehydration, in which both water and salt are lost, and isotonic dehydration, in which water and salt are lost in equal proportions.

Additionally, the drug can be used as a short-term intravascular volume replacement to increase the volume of fluid within the blood vessels.It also serves as a carrier solution for electrolyte concentrates and medications compatible with the solution, as well as for moistening dressings.

The solution contains 9 g of sodium chloride, 154 mmol of sodium ions and 154 mmol of chloride ions.The excipients included are sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid (25%) and water for injection purposes.

Contraindications

The medicine must not be used if you are hypersensitive to sodium chloride or any of the other ingredients of the medicine.The medicine should also not be used in cases of overhydration (hyperhydration states).

Dosage

This medicine should always be used exactly as described.It represents a basic electrolyte solution that is used to keep the veins open, as a carrier or solvent for medications and for isotonic fluid delivery.

The dosage depends on the fluid and electrolyte requirements, which are usually 40 ml per kilogram of body weight per day or approx. 6 mmol sodium per kilogram of body weight per day.The size of the sodium deficit can be roughly estimated.

The maximum daily dose is determined by fluid and electrolyte requirements.For adults, a guideline value of 3 - 6 mmol sodium per kilogram of body weight per day applies.A fluid intake of 40 ml per kilogram of body weight per day should not be exceeded in adults.

The maximum infusion rate depends on the clinical situation.For children, a guideline value of 3 - 5 mmol sodium per kilogram of body weight per day applies.

For the production of parenterals, the dosage, duration of use and routes of administration are based on the relevant information for the diluted or dissolved drug.

In the event of an overdose, symptoms such as overhydration, increased sodium or chloride blood levels, increased osmotic pressure in the blood and a metabolic disorder with hyperacidification of the blood may occur.In such cases, fluid intake should be stopped and diuretics should be administered.If urine production is severely restricted, kidney replacement procedures may be necessary.

Intake

This medicine is administered intravenously.It can also be used to prepare parenterals to dissolve or dilute medicines immediately before use.The dosage, duration of use and routes of administration depend on the information for the diluted or dissolved drug.

Patient information

Particular caution should be exercised in cases of low blood potassium, elevated blood sodium or chloride levels, and conditions requiring restricted sodium intake, such as heart failure, tissue swelling, pulmonary edema, hypertension, severe renal impairment, and eclampsia.

Depending on the volume administered and the patient's condition, checks of electrolyte and fluid status may be necessary.The medicine is suitable for adults and children and has no influence on the ability to drive or use machines.
