Area of application

The isotonic saline solution is a potassium-free 0.9% sodium chloride solution for infusion.It serves as a plasma isotonic fluid replacement for hypotonic and isotonic dehydration.Hypotonic dehydration occurs when the body loses water and salt, while isotonic dehydration occurs when water and salt are lost in equal proportions.The solution can also be used as a short-term intravascular volume replacement, as a carrier solution for electrolyte concentrates and compatible medications, and for moistening dressings.No prescription is required for this product.

Active ingredients / ingredients / ingredients

The solution contains 9 g of sodium chloride, 154 mmol of sodium ions and 154 mmol of chloride ions.The excipients included are sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid 25% and water for injection purposes.

Contraindications

The medicine must not be used if you are hypersensitive to sodium chloride or any of the other ingredients or suffer from overhydration (hyperhydration states).

Dosage

The dosage depends on the fluid and electrolyte requirements, which are usually 40 ml/kg body weight per day or approx. 6 mmol sodium/kg body weight per day.The maximum daily dose for adults is 3 - 6 mmol sodium/kg body weight/day, for children 3 - 5 mmol sodium/kg body weight/day.The maximum infusion rate depends on the clinical situation.

In the event of an overdose, symptoms such as overhydration, increased sodium or chloride blood levels, increased osmotic pressure in the blood and a metabolic disorder with hyperacidification of the blood may occur.In such cases, fluid intake should be stopped and diuretics should be administered.If urine production is severely restricted, a kidney replacement procedure may be necessary.

Intake

The solution is administered intravenously.It can also be used to prepare injection or infusion preparations, with the dosage, duration of use and route of administration depending on the information for the diluted/dissolved medicinal product.

Patient information

Particular caution is required in the case of low potassium levels in the blood, increased sodium or chloride levels in the blood, and in diseases that require restricted sodium intake.Depending on the volume administered and the patient's condition, electrolyte and fluid status checks may be necessary.The medicine is suitable for adults and children and has no influence on the ability to drive or use machines.

There are no concerns about use during pregnancy and breastfeeding if the treatment is appropriate.However, you should ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
