Area of application

Dekristol® D3 contains vitamin D3 (colecalciferol), which regulates the absorption and metabolism of calcium as well as the incorporation of calcium into bone tissue.It is used to prevent rickets and osteomalacia in children, adolescents and adults and to support the treatment of osteoporosis in adults.The preparation is also suitable for preventing vitamin D deficiency in people at apparent risk.

Mode of action

The active ingredient colecalciferol in Dekristol® D3 is identical to the vitamin D3 found in the human organism.It regulates the absorption and metabolism of calcium as well as the incorporation of calcium into bone tissue.This is particularly important for bone health and preventing bone diseases.

Dekristol® D3 tablets contain the active ingredient colecalciferol.One tablet contains 5 mg colecalciferol dry concentrate, equivalent to 12.5 µg colecalciferol or 500 IU vitamin D3.The other ingredients include lactose-1-water, sucrose, microcrystalline cellulose, corn starch, modified corn starch, carboxymethyl starch sodium (type A) (Ph.Eur.), colloidal silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, sodium ascorbate, medium-chain triglycerides and all-rac-alpha-tocopherol.

Contraindications

Dekristol® D3 tablets must not be taken if you are known to be hypersensitive to one of the ingredients, if you have hypercalcemia (increased calcium concentration in the blood) and/or hypercalciuria (increased calcium concentration in the urine), if you have diagnosed hypervitaminosis D (high vitamin D concentrations in the blood) and if you have kidney stones.

Dosage

The tablets should be taken with sufficient water.For infants and small children, the tablet can be dissolved on a teaspoon with water or milk and the dissolved tablet can be given directly into the child's mouth, ideally during a meal.To prevent rickets and osteomalacia in children, adolescents and adults, 1 tablet daily is recommended.To support the treatment of osteoporosis in adults, 2 tablets daily are recommended.The dosage for prevention of rickets in premature babies should be determined by the attending physician.If there is an apparent risk of vitamin D deficiency, children, adolescents and adults can take 1 - 2 tablets daily.

Intake

For children, adolescents and adults, the tablets should be taken with sufficient water.For infants and small children, the tablet can be dissolved on a teaspoon with water or milk and the dissolved tablet can be given directly into the child's mouth, ideally during a meal.Adding the tablets to a bottle or porridge meal for infants is not recommended, as complete vitamin D intake cannot be guaranteed.If the tablets are to be administered with food, they should only be added after the food has been boiled and then cooled.When using vitaminized food, the amount of vitamin D it contains must be taken into account.

Patient information

Particular caution is required when taking it if you are prone to the formation of calcium-containing kidney stones, have impaired excretion of calcium and phosphate via the kidneys, are being treated with medicines to promote urine excretion or if your ability to move is severely restricted.If kidney function is impaired, the doctor should monitor the effect of treatment on calcium and phosphate balance.If other medicines containing vitamin D are prescribed, the dose of vitamin D in the preparation must be taken into account. Additional administration of vitamin D or calcium should only be given under medical supervision.Infants and young children should use the medicine with particular caution as they may not be able to swallow the tablets.It is recommended to dissolve the tablets as directed or use drops instead.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.Daily doses of up to 500 IU/day are safe during pregnancy.Long-term overdoses of vitamin D must be prevented during pregnancy, as the resulting hypercalcemia can lead to physical and mental disability as well as congenital heart and eye diseases in the child.During pregnancy, the preparation should only be taken according to strict indications and only in the dosage that is absolutely necessary to eliminate the vitamin D deficiency.Women are allowed to breastfeed during treatment because vitamin D and its metabolites are excreted in breast milk.
