Onychomycosis is a disease of the nail caused by microscopic fungi.These fungi reproduce particularly well in warm, humid and dark environments, such as in shoes.They feed on keratin, the main component of the nail, and can cause discoloration (whitish, yellowish), hardening, chipping or even detachment of the nail (onycholysis).

This fungal infection is contagious, and certain factors can increase the risk of infection.These include damaged nails, excessive sweating, wearing poorly ventilated shoes, walking barefoot in swimming pools, or playing sports without shoes.
