Areas of application

Canesten Extra Nail Set is a medicine for the nail-stripping treatment of fungal diseases of the nails on the hands and feet.It also has an anti-fungal (antifungal) effect.Fungi grow deep into the skin and usually take root there with a network of threads.Bifonazole, an active ingredient in the ointment, attacks the fungus in the skin.Urea, another effective component of the ointment, softens the treated diseased nail areas, making them easier to remove.

Mode of action

The effect of the ointment contained in the Canesten Extra nail set is based on two substances.The highly concentrated urea reliably softens the infected nail material, while bifonazole acts as an antifungal agent with a broad spectrum of activity.It specifically combats various pathogens that cause human skin and nail fungal infections.The combination of both active ingredients leads to the removal of infected nail material and the fight against the fungal infection itself.

1 g of ointment from the Canesten Extra nail set contains 10 mg bifonazole and 400 mg urea as effective ingredients.Other ingredients include wool wax, bleached wax and white petroleum jelly.

Contraindications

If you are known to be hypersensitive to any of the active ingredients or other ingredients, the product must not be used.Particular care should be taken when using it if you have had a hypersensitive reaction to other anti-fungal medications or patches in the past.It may only be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding as well as with infants after consulting a doctor and carefully weighing the risks and benefits.

Dosage

Apply a thin layer of ointment to affected nails once daily until the entire nail surface is covered.The ointment has a firm consistency to enable precise application without running.Then cover the affected fingernails or toenails with the plaster.The patch can be halved depending on the nail size.Make sure that no ointment gets into the gap between the skin and the adhesive surface and do not touch the adhesive surface of the plaster with your fingers.

After every 24 hours, the plaster is removed and the affected fingers or toes are bathed in warm water for about 10 minutes.Then carefully remove the softened, diseased nail substance with the spatula.Finally, the treated nails are dried thoroughly, the ointment is applied again and covered with the plaster.

The treatment must be carried out daily until all diseased parts of the nail are removed and the nail bed is smooth.This generally takes 7-14 days.After nail removal, consistent anti-fungal treatment should be carried out with a bifonazole cream (urea-free) once a day for approx. 4 weeks.

Intake

Apply enough ointment to the diseased nails until the entire nail surface is covered.Then cover the affected fingernails or toenails with the plaster.The plaster may need to be halved depending on the size of the nail.In order to maintain the adhesiveness of the plaster, please ensure that no ointment penetrates the gap between the skin and the adhesive surface when sticking the plaster on.You should also not touch the adhesive surface of the plaster with your fingers.

Covering the area of skin surrounding the nail is generally not necessary.If this is still necessary due to irritation, zinc paste, for example, can be applied to the edges of the skin surrounding the nail.

Change towels and clothing that have come into contact with the diseased areas daily.This will help you avoid transmitting the fungal disease to other parts of the body or other people.

Patient information

Take special care when using the medicine if you have had a history of hypersensitivity to other medicines for fungal infections.The ointment should not be placed in the eyes.The medicine should only be used in infants under medical supervision.Be careful not to get any ointment in the infant's mouth.

Pregnancy

The medicine should only be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding after careful medical benefit-risk assessment, as there is no experience with its use in pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Notes

For the successful treatment of fungal infections of the skin and/or nails, adequate clothing and personal hygiene is extremely important in addition to medication.To avoid new infections, you should change stockings and socks every day.You should also replace washcloths or towels used for personal hygiene every day and, if possible, boil them for cleaning or use appropriate fungicidal washing substances.

After successful treatment, the nail can grow back healthy within approx. 8 - 10 months.

Now I know that aftercare is crucial once the nail has grown back to the front. I've already had to use the kit 3 times because the fungus came back: 2016, 2018 and 2019. As soon as 1 mm of nail protrudes at the front, it's extremely easy for a remaining fungal spore to settle again due to shower moisture or closed shoes. I realised this the third time. I also stopped using antifungal varnish as aftercare because it doesn't help against my fungus. For 1 year now I have been applying the aftercare cream to the nail fold and the front edge of the nail, always before slipping into a closed shoe. And I also keep the nail very short and wait a few minutes after a shower until the foot is completely dry, with the socks on. From time to time, I use a corner pick to check whether there is a hollow space under the nail. If there is, I immediately cut it very short. The most vulnerable areas are the two edges of the nail on the right and left where it joins the skin, at the front at the corners. Nobody would realise at first glance that my nail was once affected because it has looked "normal" again for a year now. Nevertheless, I am considering using the set again to stabilise the right edge of the nail, where there is always a little cavity. The plaster allows a more intensive effect than a simple application of cream. The left nail edge is pacified. I will continue to have follow-up care and check-ups for years to come because I'm tired of risking having to walk around with a detached nail again. It just looks too disgusting. I think it's minimally invasive to apply cream to such a small area because you really only need very little. A friend of mine had her nail pulled 10 times in all seriousness and took anti-fungal tablets each time. Today she has a little liver damage. It wouldn't be worth it to me. I'd rather use cream. Oh yes, another note: the scraper was completely useless during the treatments because the nail didn't soften. I suspect the fungus was in my nail bed, at most on the underside of the nail. That's probably why the polish didn't help. At the beginning of each set treatment, I simply used nail scissors to cut away the areas of the nail where there was a cavity. This allowed the cream to work intensively on the affected nail bed under the plaster for 14 days and the nail could then grow back healthily. There were only ever relapse problems when the nail was in front again for a while and I became careless or because my doctor thought the varnish would be more effective than aftercare, which was not the case.

The combination ointment of urea and bifonazole seems to be the first combination so far that works on the correspondingly thick/hard nail of the big toe (in my case). I find the tolerance excellent and the tube is so economical that I was also able to treat the other affected nail with normal plasters (for cutting to size). A clear recommendation!

16 Months of regular use of varnish preparations did not impress the nail fungus. The Canesten set, on the other hand, finally eliminated the nail fungus within five weeks! It has stayed that way for many years now.

It depends on how far the nail fungus has already spread. If the entire toe is affected, the whole nail will come off and it is of course painful to scrape down to the flesh with a scraper and walk in your shoe without a nail. In my case, the plasters weren't enough, so I tried using other plasters until the cream was all used up. Unfortunately, the nail grew back completely with infestation and so the painful procedure was in vain. Conclusion: The thing works as described, but unfortunately there was no success.

I have been trying to get rid of a nail fungus on my right foot for a long time. Nail varnishes have not helped so far, only prevented further spread.I have now used the ointment for 2 weeks according to the instructions, the infected areas could be removed, but with great effort and not without pain.The nail does not soften so that it can be removed easily, it takes some patience and effort.I hope that the final treatment with the Canesten ointment will help me to succeed, because you can only see it when the nails have grown back.

I had discovered nail fungus on my little toe and naturally wanted to get rid of it as quickly as possible - at the pharmacy they told me that the normal varnishes don't do much and recommended Canesten cream. This should be used for 7-14 days (although 14 days is of course better). The pack contains Canesten cream with bifonazole+ urea, waterproof plasters and a scraper to remove the infested areas of skin. Sounds bad, but it's not :-) The application is simple: you apply the cream thinly to the affected area(s), stick on a (waterproof) plaster and leave it on for 24 hours - the urea softens the affected areas of the nail (the healthy ones remain untouched) and the bifonazole cream can penetrate. After 24 hours (preferably in the evening), remove the plaster and soak the foot in warm water for 10 minutes, after which the affected nail areas can be easily removed with a scraper. Well, it wasn't super easy, but with a bit of pressure I got everything off - it didn't hurt either, it was just a bit uncomfortable..but that could also have been due to the idea itself ;-) Then I applied cream and plasters again and repeated the whole process for 14 days. In my case, after about 1 week there wasn't much left to scrape off - but you can easily recognise the affected layers, as these can really be removed with a little pressure and the healthy ones cannot. I helped with the scissors from time to time. Important: of course clean all scissors etc. well afterwards and do not use them for other parts of the body :-) It's also best not to walk barefoot and always wash your towels (at 60°). My nail was about 1/3 infected and after the 2 weeks it didn't look as bad as I had imagined - I had also bought the normal bifonazole cream, which supports the new nail growth, as a new nail is also very susceptible to fungi - there are enough plasters if you only have one infected nail - for all toes, except the big one, you have to cut the plasters in half and stick them over the toes - with a little practice you can manage to stick them in such a way that no water really penetrates. I'm very happy with the product, as I was able to get rid of my fungus and (so far) it has stayed gone :-)

The ointment works as indicated and the diseased nail begins to peel off after just two days. The non-diseased parts of the nail remain untouched. The product is easy and safe to use and I had no problems with it. Highly recommended, and unlike the polish products, results are visible in a very short time.
