General information about Emla plasters
Emla plaster is a plaster containing active ingredients that is used for local anesthesia of the skin.It contains the active ingredients lidocaine and prilocaine, which belong to the group of local anesthetics.These active ingredients suppress the transmission of stimuli by the nerves and temporarily make the skin insensitive to pain.Emla patch is applied to the skin before certain medical procedures to reduce the sensation of pain.It can be used in adults, adolescents and children to relieve pain from needle punctures or minor skin surgeries.

Areas of application
Emla patch is used to anesthetize the skin before needle punctures, such as injections or blood draws, as well as before minor surgical procedures on the skin.It helps to reduce the sensation of pain in the treated area of skin.A suitable area of application is, for example, skin anesthesia before measuring blood sugar levels or as preparation before vaccination.
Active ingredients and ingredients
Emla patch contains the active ingredients lidocaine and prilocaine, each in an amount of 25 mg per patch.Additionally, it contains various excipients such as carbomer 974P, cellulose, sodium hydroxide, macrogol glycerol hydroxystearate, polyethylene, poly(acrylamide-co-isooctyl acrylate), a siliconized polyethylene film and purified water.
Application and dosage
Emla patch should be applied to clean, dry and hairless skin at least one hour before the planned procedure.The affected area of skin should be clean and dry.The plaster must not be cut or otherwise divided.It is pressed firmly on the outer edge so that no emulsion can escape to the side under the plaster.It is advisable to note the time at which it was applied on the edge of the patch.
One or more patches are usually applied to adults and adolescents over 12 years of age.The exposure time is at least 60 minutes, but not more than 5 hours.For children, the number of patches and the duration of application depends on their age.Newborns and infants up to 2 months can wear the patch for a maximum of one hour, while infants 3 to 11 months can use up to 2 patches for a maximum of 4 hours.Children 1 to 5 years old can use up to 10 patches for a maximum of 5 hours, and children 6 to 11 years old can use up to 20 patches for a maximum of 5 hours.
Contraindications
Emla patch must not be used if you are hypersensitive (allergic) to the active ingredients lidocaine and prilocaine or any of the other ingredients.The patch should also not be used if you are hypersensitive to other painkillers (local anesthetics of the amide type).In the case of certain diseases such as a hereditary enzyme disorder (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency) or reduced oxygen transport by red blood cells (methemoglobinemia), the patch should only be used after consulting a doctor.
Side effects
Possible side effects of Emla patch include skin redness, water retention, light skin color, pain, itching, and feeling of warmth at the application site.In rare cases, reduced oxygen transport by red blood cells (methemoglobinemia), hypersensitivity or irritation of the cornea of the eye may occur.With prolonged use, especially in children with neurodermatitis or warts, small to large patches of skin damage can occur.
Storage
Emla patches should be stored at room temperature and protected from frost.It must not be refrigerated or frozen.Keep the medicine out of the reach and reach of children and do not use it after the expiry date stated on the foil and carton.
Additional notes
Emla patch should not be applied to cuts, abrasions, wounds, areas of rash or eczema, near the eyes or inside the mouth.In the event of accidental contact with the eye, it should be rinsed immediately with plenty of lukewarm water.If the effect lasts for more than 5 hours, the anesthetic effect wears off.
