Area of application

Isotonic sodium chloride solution 0.9% Braun is a saline solution used to dissolve or dilute medicines given by injection.The solution will be given to you by a doctor or healthcare professional.It contains table salt in a concentration that corresponds to the salt concentration in the blood.It is used for dehydration, sodium and fluid deficiency, increased pH and reduced chloride levels as well as chloride losses.It is also used for short-term replenishment of the vascular system, as a carrier solution for electrolyte concentrates and compatible medications, as well as for wound treatment and moistening cloths and bandages.

The injection solution contains the active ingredient sodium chloride (table salt).100 ml of the solution contains 0.9 g of sodium chloride.The other ingredient is water for injections.The electrolyte concentrations are Na+ 154 mmol/l and Cl- 154 mmol/l.The theoretical osmolarity is 308 mOsm/l.

Contraindications

This medicine must not be used if you suffer from overhydration.Particular caution is required in the case of low potassium levels, increased sodium levels, increased chloride levels and in diseases that require restricted sodium intake.

Dosage

The amount of solution you receive will depend on your fluid and electrolyte needs.The maximum dose is 40 ml per kg body weight per day, which corresponds to 6 mmol sodium per kg body weight per day.The solution is usually administered at up to 5 ml per kg of body weight per hour, which corresponds to around 1.7 drops per kg of body weight per minute.In exceptional cases, the solution can also be administered more quickly.The amount required for wound treatment or moistening depends on the respective needs.

Intake

The solution is applied intravenously or used for rinsing and moistening.The administration is carried out by a doctor or medical professional.

Patient information

During the infusion, your water balance, acid-base balance and serum electrolyte levels will be monitored.Medicines should be kept out of the reach of children and should not be used after the expiry date.

Pregnancy

Before taking any medication, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.This preparation should be used with caution in pregnancy-related illnesses with high blood pressure, cramps and fluid accumulation in the tissue (eclampsia).
