Iodide 100 µg HEXAL® tablets is a medicine to support thyroid function.It is used to prevent iodine deficiency and to treat goiter.The product is suitable for adults, children and infants.No prescription is required for this product.

Area of application

The thyroid plays a crucial role in the metabolism of the human body.It produces hormones that are important for energy balance and growth.Iodine is an essential component of these hormones.In Germany there is often an iodine deficiency, which can lead to an enlargement of the thyroid gland, known as goiter.Adequate iodine intake is particularly important during pregnancy.

Iodide 100 µg HEXAL® tablets contains the active ingredient potassium iodide and helps to avoid iodine deficiency and maintain the natural function of the thyroid.

Iodide 100 µg HEXAL® tablets contains the following ingredients:

Active ingredient: potassium iodide.One tablet contains 130.8 micrograms of potassium iodide.

Other ingredients: carboxymethyl starch, sodium salt type A, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, corn starch, mannitol.

Contraindications

Iodide 100 µg HEXAL® tablets must not be taken if:

Allergy to potassium iodide or any of the other ingredients.

Manifesting hyperthyroidism.

Latent hyperthyroidism at a dosage of more than 150 micrograms of iodine per day.

Benign, hormone-producing tumors or uncontrolled hormone-producing areas of the thyroid gland in a dosage of 300 - 1000 micrograms of iodine per day, except for preoperative treatment.

Hypocomplementemic vasculitis.

Dermatitis herpetiformis Duhring.

Dosage

The recommended dose of Iodide 100 µg HEXAL® tablets varies depending on the area of application and age group:

To prevent goiter:

Infants and children: ½ to 1 tablet daily.

Adolescents and adults: 1-2 tablets daily.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: 2 tablets daily.

For prevention after surgery or medical treatment of a goiter with normal hormone levels: 1-2 tablets daily.

To treat a goiter with normal hormone levels:

Newborns, children and adolescents: 1-2 tablets daily.

Younger adults: 3-5 tablets daily.

The preventative administration of iodide 100 µg HEXAL® tablets usually takes place over years, sometimes for life.The duration of use is determined by the attending physician.

Intake

Take Iodide 100 µg HEXAL® tablets after a meal with sufficient liquid, such as a glass of water.

Patient information

Please talk to your doctor before taking Iodide 100 µg HEXAL® tablets.Higher doses of potassium iodide combined with potassium-sparing diuretics can lead to increased potassium levels.

The tablet can be divided into equal doses.

Keep out of the reach of children.

Pregnancy

There is an increased need for iodine during pregnancy and breastfeeding.Adequate iodine intake is particularly important.To date, no risks have been identified when using iodine preparations in doses of up to 200 micrograms daily.Iodine is excreted into breast milk and accumulates there.

Notes

Before the planned use of iodine and preparations containing iodine, it should be checked whether an overactive thyroid or a nodular goiter is present.This is especially true in adults and before planned iodine therapy, as in this situation the possibility of causing hyperthyroidism must be taken into account.

The administration of iodine, especially in high doses, or medications containing iodine can make planned treatment of hyperthyroidism, hormone-producing thyroid tumors and malignant thyroid tumors impossible.

If a malignant thyroid tumor is suspected, iodine administration in any form should be avoided.

In addition, the administration of high doses of iodine can influence the thyroid examination and lead to errors if the person is predisposed to do so.This applies specifically to thyroid metabolism studies and iodine metabolism studies.
