Iodide 200 µg HEXAL® tablets are a medicine to support thyroid function.It is used to prevent iodine deficiency and to treat goiter.The preparation is suitable for adults, children and infants.No prescription is required for this product.

Area of application

The thyroid plays a crucial role in the metabolism of the human body.It produces hormones that are important for numerous body functions.Iodine is an essential component of these hormones.In regions with iodine deficiency, such as Germany, the thyroid gland can enlarge, which can ultimately lead to the formation of a goiter.The need for iodine is particularly increased during pregnancy, which is why adequate iodine intake is particularly important during this time.

Taking Iodide 200 µg HEXAL® tablets regularly can help prevent iodine deficiency and maintain the natural function of the thyroid.

Iodide 200 µg HEXAL® tablets contain the active ingredient potassium iodide.One tablet contains 261.6 micrograms of potassium iodide, which is equivalent to 200 micrograms of iodine.In addition, the preparation contains the following other ingredients: carboxymethyl starch sodium (type A) (Ph.Eur.), microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate (Ph.Eur.), corn starch and mannitol (Ph.Eur.).

Contraindications

Iodide 200 µg HEXAL® tablets must not be taken if you are allergic to potassium iodide or any of the other ingredients of the drug.Duhring may also be used in the case of manifest hyperthyroidism, latent hyperthyroidism in a dosage of more than 150 micrograms of iodine per day, in the case of a benign, hormone-producing tumor or uncontrolled hormone-producing areas of the thyroid in a dosage of 300 - 1000 micrograms of iodine per day (except for preoperative treatment), in the case of hypocomplementemic vasculitis or dermatitis herpetiformisthe preparation should not be used.

Dosage

The recommended dose of Iodide 200 µg HEXAL® tablets depends on the respective area of application.Always take the preparation exactly as directed and ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

To prevent goiter in cases of iodine deficiency, the recommended dose for infants and children is 50 - 100 µg iodine once daily.Adolescents and adults should take ½ - 1 tablet (corresponding to 100 - 200 µg iodine) once daily.Pregnant and breastfeeding women should take one tablet (corresponding to 200 µg iodine) daily.

To prevent re-growth of goiter after completion of drug treatment or after surgery for iodine deficiency goiter, the recommended dose is ½ - 1 tablet (corresponding to 100 - 200 µg iodine) once daily.

To treat iodine deficiency goiter, the recommended dose for newborns, children and adolescents is ½ - 1 tablet (corresponding to 100 - 200 µg iodine) once daily.Younger adults should take 1½ - 2½ tablets (corresponding to 300 - 500 µg iodine) daily.

The preventive administration of the drug generally has to take place over a period of years, often for life.To treat goiter in newborns, 2 - 4 weeks are usually sufficient; for children, adolescents and adults, 6 - 12 months or more are usually required.The treating doctor decides on the duration of use.

If you have taken more than you should, please contact your doctor immediately.If you forget to take a dose, do not take a double dose.The next day, take the usual prescribed amount.If you stop taking it, please contact your doctor.

Intake

Take Iodide 200 µg HEXAL® tablets after a meal with sufficient liquid, such as a glass of water.

Patient information

Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking the medicine.If you have previously had an overactive thyroid or suffered from goiter, please consult your doctor before starting therapy with this preparation.This also applies if you have an enlarged thyroid with nodules.If you have hot nodules, do not consume more than 150 micrograms daily.

If you need to undergo examination or therapy with radioiodine, please inform your doctor that you are taking the medicine.Your doctor may ask you to stop taking this medicine because it may affect the way radioiodine works.

The medicine has no influence on the ability to drive or use machines.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.

There is an increased need for iodine during breastfeeding, so adequate iodine intake is particularly important.To date, no risks have been identified when using iodine preparations in doses of up to 200 micrograms daily.Iodine is excreted into breast milk and accumulates there.

Notes

Be sure to talk to your doctor before taking Iodide 200 µg HEXAL® tablets.Higher doses of potassium iodide combined with potassium-sparing diuretics can lead to increased potassium levels.

Keep out of the reach of children.

The tablet can be divided into equal doses.

Other

Before the planned use of iodine and preparations containing iodine, it should be checked whether an overactive thyroid or a nodular goiter is present.This is especially true in adults and before planned iodine treatment, as in this situation the possibility of causing hyperthyroidism must be taken into account.In cases of suspicion, further diagnostics are indicated.

The administration of iodine (especially in high doses) or medications containing iodine can make planned radioiodine treatment of hyperthyroidism, hormone-producing thyroid tumors and malignant thyroid tumors impossible.If a malignant thyroid tumor is suspected, iodine administration in any form should be avoided.
