Sodium sulfate, also known as Glauber's salt, was discovered by the chemist and pharmacist Johann Rudolph Glauber as a component of mineral water.It is used for short-term use in cases of constipation and for emptying the intestines before diagnostic and therapeutic measures.No prescription is required for this product.

1 Gram of the powder contains 1 gram of sodium sulfate decahydrate, which is equivalent to 0.44 grams of anhydrous sodium sulfate.No other components are included.

Contraindications

The preparation must not be used in cases of intestinal obstruction.It should not be used in cases of high blood pressure, heart failure, inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases and water and electrolyte imbalances.The preparation should not be used during pregnancy as it can increase the existing tendency to form edema.

Dosage

Unless otherwise prescribed, adults drink 2 to 4 teaspoons (10 to 20 grams) of sodium sulfate decahydrate dissolved in approximately 250 milliliters of water.For rapid bowel emptying, drink 1 to 2 tablespoons (20 to 30 grams) dissolved in around 500 milliliters of water.Children over 6 years receive half the dose.

Duration of application

Sodium sulfate decahydrate should only be used short-term.Long-term use leads to an increase in intestinal sluggishness.

Intake

The preparation is used to dissolve in water.

Overdose

Overdose of sodium sulfate decahydrate can lead to water withdrawal with electrolyte disturbances.Therapy must be based on the symptoms.

Pregnancy

The preparation should not be used during pregnancy as it can increase the existing tendency to form fluid retention (edema).There are no known harmful effects of sodium sulfate decahydrate during breastfeeding.
