Magnesium deficiency and its symptoms
Magnesium is an essential mineral that is required for many body functions.A deficiency can manifest itself through various symptoms, including muscle cramps, tension, restless leg syndrome, eyelid and muscle twitching, sensory disorders, general weakness and fatigue, headaches, cardiac arrhythmias, high blood pressure, nervousness, inner restlessness, sleep disorders, depressed mood, feelings of anxiety, increased susceptibility to stress, irritable bowel symptoms and menstrual problems.
Causes of magnesium deficiency
Magnesium balance depends on four factors: intake, requirement, loss and rate of absorption from the intestine.A deficiency occurs when not enough magnesium is supplied, there is an increased need, the body excretes too much magnesium due to illness or stress, or the absorption of the mineral into the body is disturbed.
Foods rich in magnesium are primarily natural products such as nuts, seeds, whole grain products, brown rice and millet.Cocoa and chocolate also contain a lot of magnesium.A diet rich in fat and phosphates, such as fast food, is unfavorable.Vegetables, fruits and salads are healthy but low in magnesium.Valuable magnesium components are lost through industrial processing.
A healthy adult should consume 300 to 350 mg of magnesium daily through their diet. The need can be increased in certain situations, such as physically or mentally strenuous work, strenuous sports, prolonged stress, during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
In some diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, the body loses more magnesium through the urine.Alcohol and sodas can also lead to magnesium losses.Sometimes the body does not absorb enough magnesium, even though enough is consumed.Absorption can be disrupted by diarrhea, chronic intestinal diseases, certain medications or hereditary predispositions.
